MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: August 17

Donn Roach continues to pound strikes in San Antonio and Walker Weickel rebounds with a strong outing in Fort Wayne. There is a lot to like in the AZL with Jake Bauers and Johnny Barbato is emerging as a starting pitching prospect in Lake Elsinore.

Sacramento River Cats 11 T-Pads 5

Key Statistics: 2B Jonathan Galvez 3-4, RBI, 2B; 1B Brandon Allen 3-4, 3 RBIs, HR(12); LHP Robbie Erlin 4.0 Ip 8 H 4 R ER BB 2 Ks; RHP Brad Brach (L, 3-3) 4 H 3 R 2 ER BB K.

Prospect Watch: While many of us may have doubts about Jonathan Galvez's glove, he can hit. In his fourth game back from injury he is now 6-14 at the plate....In 19 games started for the T-Pads this year Erlin has only given up over three earned runs three times, which is a pretty good statistic for the PCL..With Chris Robinson up in the big leagues MadFriars' favorite Cody Decker got another opportunity to squat behind the plate. Not a great night offensively with an 0-3 night and a walk but only a passed ball defensively.

Missions 2 NW Arkansas Naturals 1

Key Statistics 2B Adam Buschini 2-4; DH Robert Kral 1-3, HR(3), BB; RHP Donn Roach (W, 8-11) 5.0 IP H K; LHP Clay Zavada (S, 1) 1.1 IP 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch: Donn Roach had his third straight exemplary outing. In his last three starts (15 innings) he has given up only one earned run as Texas League batters continue to drive his sinker into the ground. Roach has been much better in the second half of the year with a 1.98 ERA in July...Robert Kral has been slumping but even when he has a batting average of .185 he still posts a .323 on-base percentage and had a walk/strikeout ratio of 11/12, which seems to indicate more balls just weren't falling than a problem with his approach.

Ranch Cucamonga Quakes 4 Storm 3

Key Statistics 3B Bridger Hunt 2-4; SS Jace Peterson 1-3, RBI, BB, SB (42); RHP Johnny Barbato 6.0 IP 3 H 7 Ks; RHP Dennis O'Grady (BS, 2)(L, 3-6) 0.2 IP 3 H 4 R 2 ER 2 BB K.

Prospect Watch: In the 2010 draft Johnny Barbato was considered one of the top prep pitchers in Florida but some problems starting in Eugene had him in the bullpen in Fort Wayne last year where he compiled a 1.84 ERA in 73.1 innings establishing himself as one of the Padres' top relief prospects. This year the Padres are trying to move him back into the starting rotation and except for a rough debut, 1.2 innings and five earned runs, the next three starts have been pretty good. For his second straight outing Barbato didn't allow a run and went six strong innings. If his performances hold up, San Diego really has something...Jace Peterson continues to have a solid season in the desert with a scorching August at .375/.528/.675 and is now 42 for 51 in stolen base attempts.

TinCaps 4 Great Lakes Loons 3

Key Statistics: DH Mallex Smith 2-5; 3B Gabriel Quintana 4-5, 2B, RBI; SS Tyler Stubblefield 2-4; RHP Walker Weickel 5.0 IP 3 H R ER 4 BB 2 Ks; RHP Jorge Guzman (W, 1-1) 2.0 IP 2 BB K; RHP Roman Madrid (S, 20) 1.0 IP 2 H R ER K.

Prospect Watch The big story in Fort Wayne the entire season from a prospect standpoint has been "How did the pitcher do?". With three of the more interesting arms in San Diego's system toeing the rubber in the Summit City this year its a legitimate question. On Saturday night Walker Weickel, the 19 year-old 6'6" former Florida prep star held the opposition to only a single run in five innings. It was a nice bounce back for Weickel who had given up five or more earned runs in three of his last four starts...Top draft pick Hunter Renfroe was 0-3 with an RBI tonight and is now hitting .250/.333/.458 in his first six games.

Emeralds 8 Everett Aqua Sox 7

Key Statistics: CF Ronnie Richardson 2-2, 2 2B, 2 BBs, 2 RS; 1B Trae Santo 2-5, 2B, 3 RBIs; RF Donavan Tate 2-3, RBI, BB; 3B Fernando Perez 2-4, HR(3), 4 RBIs; RHP Erik Cabrera (W, 1-7) 2.0 IP 3 H R ER 2 Ks; RHP Josh Richardson 1.1 IP 3 H BB.

Prospect Watch A interesting stat line from center fielder Ronnie Richardson featuring all two's...Trae Santos' three run double in the seventh inning put the Emeralds ahead as they ended a five game losing streak on the road in Everett...Donavan Tate has his second multi-hit game since joining Eugene and is now hitting .231/.375/.346. He is showing good plate discipline with a 5/7 BB/K ratio, as he did last year in Lake Elsinore, but one of the many questions about him is will he hit for any power?

AZL Padres 9 AZL Brewers 2

Key Statistics SS Josh VanMeter 2-5, 2 RBIs; 1B Jake Bauers 3-4 2B; LF Mason Smith 2-4, C Tyler Dial 3-4, 2B Adam Ford 1-2, 2 BBs; RHP Peter Kelich 6.0 IP 5 H 2 R ER 6Ks.

Prospect Watch: The game was suspended by lighting. No word if the final three innings will be made up...Jake Bauers is now hitting .403/.473/.502 and depending how well he does in the Instructional Leagues is making a big push for the starting first base job in Fort Wayne next season....Pete Kelich, a thirty-eighth round pick from Bryant University has had a nice year in the desert with a 5-1 record and 1.56 ERA. His peripheral numbers are cartoonish with 57 strikeouts in 52.1 innings against only one walk.
