MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: August 24

As the minor league season approaches its final full week, the TinCaps are playing their best ball since the first half. Reymond Fuentes is just one of a group of outfielders throughout the system finishing the campaign with a flourish.

Tucson Padres 13 Tacoma Raniers 6

Key Statistics: CF Reymond Fuentes 3-5, 2R, BB, SB; LF Mike Wilson 4-5, 2 2B, 2R, 5RBI; RHP Matt Andriese 5IP, 4H, 1ER, 3K, 2BB

Prospect Watch: Matt Andriese's inconsistent run through the PCL took another upswing on Friday as the big righty turned in a strong performance at home. He needed only 64 pitches to power through five innings, giving up a single and three doubles on the way to one earned run. Andriese, who is scheduled to make his next appearance on his 24th birthday next week, is on track to be the only Padres farmhand to make 25 starts both last season and this. … Reymond Fuentes's resurrection season continued as the fleet centerfielder added three more hits and a stolen base to his gaudy Triple-A numbers. Since joining Tucson two weeks ago, the 22-year-old has put together a 12-game hitting streak and owns a .420/.508/.500 line. He's also stolen six bases for Tucson and has 35 overall in 105 games.

Frisco RoughRiders 4 San Antonio Missions 2

Key Statistics: CF Rico Noel 2-4, 2RBI; RHP Donn Roach 4IP, 8H, 4ER

Donn Roach has really been on a roll since the All-Star break, but the sinker-ball specialist was knocked around pretty well Friday. Roach allowed eight hits, three for extra bases, in four innings of work. After working 104.1 innings in his first full season of starting last year, the 23-year-old leads the organization with 134 innings this year. … Rico Noel had two more singles and has a strong .384 on-base percentage this month. Getting on more has helped him to 13 stolen bases in just 18 games, but he has only one extra-base hit in 77 August plate appearances.

Modesto Nuts 5 Lake Elsinore Storm 3

Key Statistics: CF Kyle Gaedele 1-4, 2B; DH A.J. Kirby-Jones 1-3, 2B, BB; RHP Johnny Barbato 5IP, 5H, 3R, 3K, 3BB, HBP

Prospect Watch: Johnny Barbato's transition back to the rotation continues as the righty from Florida worked five more innings Friday. After back-to-back stellar performances, Barbato was touched for three runs on five hits as his command flagged a bit. He now has 18 strikeouts against nine walks in his five starts. … Jeremy Baltz extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double and walk in four plate appearances. The St. John's alum is hitting .288 this month.

Ft. Wayne TinCaps 4 South Bend Silver Hawks 3

Key Statistics: 3B Gabriel Quintana 2-3, BB; RHP Walker Weickel 5IP, 4H, 2R, 1ER, 6K, 2BB

Prospect Watch: Though he didn't pick up the win, Walker Weickel delivered his most complete effort in two months. The tall righty yielded one earned run on four hits over five innings, striking out six against only two walks. … Gabriel Quintana extended his streak to seven games as well, picking up a pair of singles and a walk. For the month, he's hitting .337, but he's had a dreadful ratio of 25 strikeouts and two walks in 95 plate appearances. At 20, he remains more of an athlete than an instinctive ball player, but he has plenty of tools to go around. … Mallex Smith swiped two more bags Friday. That's now nine in his last six games. If he somehow keeps that pace going for the last full week of the season, he might overtake the sidelined Travis Jankowski for the system lead.

Hillsboro Hops 3 Eugene Emeralds 2

Key Statistics: LF Edwin Moreno 3-4, R; RF Donavan Tate 0-4, 4K; RHP Bryan Verbitsky 3IP, 2H, 1R, 4K, 2BB;

Prospect Watch: After two starts with little command, Bryan Verbitsky had a stronger performance last night, striking out four against two walks in three innings of work. The organization has been careful with the third rounder's pitch counts after he made the transition to pitching full time at Hofstra this year. He hasn't pitched past three innings in his last six starts.

AZL Dodgers 10 AZL Padres 4

Key Statistics: RF Franmil Reyes 3-4, R, 2E; CF Rod Boykin 2-5, 2RBI; RHP Adrian De Horta 3IP, 3H, 4ER, 2K, 3BB

Prospect Watch: Franmil Reyes had three hits for the second night in a row, pushing his August line to .333/.417/.486. The barely-18-year-old will likely head a very young delegation of position players in Ft. Wayne next spring. … Things have gone from ugly to nightmarish for Malcom Diaz in the desert. After the Padres took the 19-year-old out of high school in Puerto Rico in the 13th round last year, he walked 27 in 17.2 innings. This year, the bottom has really fallen out and he's issued 35 free passes in 18.2. In five appearances this month, Diaz has walked 17 and uncorked 15 wild pitches, capped off by five in one third of an inning Friday.
