MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: August 24

Burch Smith has another strong outing in Tucson while Rey Fuentes keeps on hitting. San Antonio wins big, as Lake Elsinore falls short. A tough outing for Zach Eflin in Fort Wayne and Eugene continues to struggle.

T-Pads 6 Tacoma Rainers 4

Key Statistics: CF Reymond Fuentes 2-5; 1B Brandon Allen 2-3, BB; LF Mike Wilson 1-3, BB; RHP Burch Smith 5.0 IP 3 H 2 R 2 ER BB 5Ks; LHP Tommy Layne (W, 2-3) 1.2 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER 3 Ks; RHP Kevin Quackenbush (S, 3) 1.1 IP K.

Prospect Watch: Triple A baseball really agrees with Rey Fuentes as he is hitting .418/.500/.491 in his first 13 games with the T-Padres. He is also six for seven in stolen base attempts...In 11 starts in Tucson Burch Smith has only allowed three or more runs twice. With a 3.83 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 54 innings against just 17 walks he should challenge for a spot in the big league rotation next spring.

Missions 10 Corpus Christi Hooks 2

Key Statistics CF Rico Noel 2-4, BB, SB(57); DH Tommy Medica 2-5, 2B; LF Adam Buschini 2-4, 2B; RF Lee Orr 2-3, 2B; SS Jeudy Valdez 3-4 3 2Bs; RHP Eddie Bonine (W, 4-3) 6.0 IP 9 H 2 R 2 ER BB K HR.

Prospect Watch: With three doubles tonight Jeudy Valdez added 15 points to his season OPS as the Missions had seven doubles on the night...Everyone who follows the system should really want to see what a completely healthy Tommy Media can do. In 67 games he has 33 extra-base hits with a .280/.364/.549 slash line. Medica was always considered a good hitter but was thought to have even more value defensively as a catcher. Hopefully he will be healthy enough to get some reps behind the plate this winter...In ten starts this season knuckballer Eddie Bonine has only given up two or more earned runs twice.

Modesto Nuts 5 Storm 4

Key Statistics SS Bridger Hunt 2-4, HR(1); 1B A.J. Kirby-Jones 1-3, BB; CF Kyle Gaedele 1-4, HR(11); LHP Frank Garces (L, 7-9) 4.2 IP 7 H 5 R 5 ER 44 BB 4 Ks.

Prospect Watch: Bridger Hunt's home run in the eighth inning cut the deficit to a single run but it was still not enough to put the Storm over the top as their playoff hopes continue to fade...Catcher Robert Kral was back in Lake Elsinore after hitting .154/.313/.308 in 21 games with the Missions. Although he struggled the move seems to be designed to give him regular playing time with the Austin Hedges and Medica with the Missions...Kyle Gaedele is two triples short of having double figures in doubles, triples and home runs to go along with 21 stolen bases. At 6'3" 220 lbs. he is a "tools monster" and if he can become more consistent could be an interesting player going forward.

Bowling Green Hot Rods 7 TinCaps 0

Key Statistics: 2B Reynaldo Bruguera 2-4; CF Mallex Smith 0-2, 3 BBs; RHP Zach Eflin (L, 7-6) 5.0 IP 7 H 5 R 2 ER BB 3 Ks HR.

Prospect Watch Although Zach Eflin took the loss he has put together a very strong debut season. In 22 starts the big right-hander has only given up more than two earned runs once and has a 86/31 K/BB ratio in 118.2 innings pitched. Eflin is one of the many prep arms that the Padres have gotten out of Florida and was picked in the first round supplemental phase of the 2012 draft as a compensation pick for the Miami Marlins signing free agent Heath Bell. It seems like a pretty good deal then and now...With three walks last night Mallex Smith, another left-handed hitting Padres' centerfielder that can steal bases (61), pushed his on-base percentage to .364.

Salem-Kelzer Volcanoes 3 Emeralds 0

Key Statistics: 3B Fernando Perez 1-3; DH Edwin Moreno 1-3; RHP Coby Cowgill (L, 2-2)4.2 IP 7 H 3 R 3 ER 3 BB 7 Ks.

Prospect Watch Eugene lost their fifth game in a row and were officially eliminated from playoff contention. The Emeralds have the worse overall record in the Northwest League at 25 - 43 with most of the Padres' top picks from the 2013 draft in the AZL this summer...Donavan Tate was in right field and was 0-3 with two strikeouts. Tate is now hitting .224/.356/.327.
