MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: June 29

Jace Peterson returns in El Paso and James Needy keeps on rolling in San Antonio. The Storm are riding the hot bat of Luis Domoromo and the TinCaps lose in extra-innings. Cory Spangenberg gets a start in center and the AZL Padres have the night off.

Chihuahuas 6 - Tacoma Rainers 4

Key Statistics:2B Jace Peterson 1-3, 2B, RBI; 3B Brooks Conrad 2-4, HR (17), 2 RBI; 1B Chris Nelson 2-4; DH Cody Decker 1-3, 3B, RBI, BB; LHP Juan Oramas 6.0 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER 5 Ks; RHP Jerry Sullivan (W, 1-0) 2.0 IP BB 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch:In the bottom of the eighth a pair of wild pitches capped of by a triple by Cody Decker and a double by Jonathan Galvez pulled the Chihuahuas from one down to to two up to give them their fifth win in six games...Although Brooks Conrad hit his seventeenth home run of the season tonight he was hitting .198 in June coming into the game...Nice night by Jace Peterson in his first game back from the major leagues....Second straight strong start by Oramas since coming back from San Antonio. In both starts he has gone at least six innings and only given up a pair of runs.

San Antonio 7 - Springfield Missions 2

Key Statistics:CF Reymond Fuentes 3-5; 1B Jason Hagerty 2-5, 3 RBI; C Austin Hedges 2-4; SS Adam Buschini 2-4, 2 HR (5), 3 RBI; RHP James Needy (W, 5-3) 6.0 IP H 2 BB 3 Ks.

Prospect Watch:San Antonio's offense showed up and James Needy always shows up...Needy is a great example of why won-loss records or K/BB ratios are not always the best ways to evaluate a pitcher. What Needy, a sinkerball/slider pitcher, game is all about is eating innings and not giving up hard contact. Today he gave up a solitary single in six innings and didn't give up a run, earned or unearned. That is a prospect... With three hits today Reymond Fuentes pushed his batting average to .315. It might be time for a trip west to AAA El Paso for the Padres to find out what they do or don't have. A third trip through the Texas League isn't going to carry much weight.

Prospect Watch:After being down 5-2 in the fourth inning, the Storm scored in the final three innings to give them their second straight win after dropping the three in a row...Tayron Guerrero, the Storm's new closer, has been one of the big surprises this year and the lanky, and six-foot-seven, 190 lbs. qualifies as "lanky" is three for three in save opportunities and has yet to allow a run...Domoromo is red hot with 34 hits in 23 games in June.

Prospect WatchThe TinCaps lost their second game in a row on a grand slam in the eleventh inning after closer Nick Mutz blew the lead in the bottom of the tenth; his fifth blown save of the season....Although Ronnie Richardson hasn't replaced Mallex Smith on the basepaths he is having a pretty good June hitting .324/.453/485...Josh VanMeter has improved his batting average by nearly forty points since June 1...Walker Weickel, a supplemental first round pick in 2012, has just had a brutal year in his second time around the Midwest League. He has a 1-8 record, a 6.32 ERA and has a 39/34 K/BB ratio.

Prospect WatchAn interesting night in Eugene. The Ems pair of runs in the fifth made the difference in the game on a solid pitching performance by Jimmy Brasoban, a pitcher that the Padres like quite a bit...Cory Spangenberg, who had one previous appearance in the outfield before tonight, got the start in centerfield...Trea Turner now has seven stolen bases in 11 games and has yet to be caught to go along with a .362 OBP...Ryan Butler, a seventh round pick in this year's draft made his first appearance in pro ball with two scoreless innings. Keep an eye on him, the Padres' thought he was a steal in the round that he was picked.
