Chihuahuas 11 - Salt Lake City Bees 7
Key Statistics:SS Tyler Greene 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB; LF Jake Goebbert 3-5, 2B, HR (13), 3 RBI; RF Rymer Liriano 2-5, 2B, RBI; 1B Cody Decker 2-4, 2 HR (20) 2 RBI, BB; DH Jonathan Galvez 2-5, HR (9), RBI; CF Rico Noel 2-3, 2 2B, RBI, BB, SB (24); LHP Jason Lane (W, 7-9) 6.0 IP 9 H 4 R 4 ER K HR; RHP Dennis O’Grady 1.0 IP H.
Prospect Watch:El Paso took the lead in the eighth inning with four runs to build on their one run lead to win the game. El Paso hit four home runs tonight and Jason Lane didn’t even hit...Goebbert has really been on fire in August with a .423/.545/.731 slash line...Cody Decker is a busy man. He plays multiple positions, makes films, shows up on ESPN Keith Olbermann’s show to discuss them wearing an Ascot, calls out Padres’ fanboys on Twitter and oh yeah, is tied for the organization lead in home runs with 20. Now I freely admit that I am a Cody Decker fan, maybe even a bit of an elderly “fanboy”, but after watching big league incumbent first baseman Yonder Alonso compile 1400 plate appearances with a sub-.400 slugging percentage, it might be fun to watch Decker, who owns a career .876 OPS in nearly 2500 plate appearances in the minor leagues to at least be given a chance to show what he can do. If he is anywhere close to 25 to 30 home runs by the end of the minor league season on Labor Day it’s hard to see the team not giving him at least a call-up in September. Decker has 44 extra-base hits in 112 games this season.

Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4 - San Antonio 3
Prospect Watch:Except for a hiccup in the fifth inning, rehabbing Joe Wieland looked good in his road start in NW Arkansas and Yeison Ascencio had a big day but it wasn’t enough as the Mission’s bullpen allowed the game to be tied in the eighth and a fielding error by Cory Spangenberg in the ninth opened the gates for the winning run in the ninth...In April Yeison Ascencio hit a very ugly .200/.247/.225. After a swing change in early May the next three months he has posted batting averages of .308,.284,.330 with nine home runs after hitting only a pair of doubles in April. Ascencio is a big powerful guy who has impressed me in his ability to adapt when frankly, I didn’t see it as being possible in April...Campos’ ERA in the first half was 2.77 so far in the second half it is at 6.19.
Storm 7 - High Desert Mavericks 2
Key StatisticsRF Mallex Smith 2-4, 2 RBI; CF Alberth Martiniez 2-4; 3B Gabriel Martiniez 2-4, HR (17), 2 RBI; LF Jeremy Baltz 1-2, 2B, BB; DH Dane Phillips 0-2, 2 BB;RHP Zach Eflin 5.0 IP 5 H 2 R 2 ER BB 3 Ks; LHP Chris Nunn 1.0 K; RHP Adam Cimber 2.0 IP H; RHP Brandon Alger 1.0 IP 2 Ks.
Prospect Watch:As we have written here before, the best thing about Zach Eflin is that he provides his team with an opportunity nearly every time he takes the mound. Eflin leads the team in with 24 starts and 128 innings pitched to go along with a 3.80 ERA...Mallex Smith didn’t steal a base tonight but pushed his overall numbers to .312/.386/.465...Lefty specialist Chris Nunn has been much better in the second half with a 2.92 ERA than in the first with a 4.88.

Lake County Captains 5 - TinCaps 2
Prospect WatchKyle Lloyd pitched six innings of shutout ball before being pulled after walking the first batter in the seventh. Unfortunately, Fort Wayne’s pen let him down giving up four earned runs after the TinCaps had put two runs on the board to take the lead...It was Lloyd’s sixth straight game striking out seven or more batters...Trea Turner, who has made only a single error in 20 games at shortstop, has done a good job of solidifying what was a very shaky infield to begin the year.

Emeralds 7 - Hillsboro Hops 6
Key Statistics:CF Auston Bousfield 2-4, 2B, BB; 2B River Stevens 2-4, 2 2B 3 RBI; C Michael Miller 2-5, 2B; SS Franchy Cordero 3-5, 3 RBI, SB (13); LF Yale Rosen 1-2, RBI, 3 BB; 1B Trae Santos 1-4, BB; RHP Zech Lemond 4.0 IP 6 H 4 R 4 ER 6 Ks HR; RHP Colby Blueberg (W, 2-0) 2.0 IP BB K; RHP Bryan Verbitsky (S,9) 1.0 IP 3 Ks.
Prospect WatchThe Ems bats are finally starting to emerge, particularly some of the higher college draft picks from this year. Bousfield and Torres have hit .400 (eight games) and .375 (six games) in August...In his last four games Cordero has not made any errors and is hitting .294/.338/.505 on the year with 13 stolen bases. Padres‘ Vice-President Randy Smith has been unwavering in his support of Cordero, and like last year, there is a lot to like in the tools package.
