Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas could only muster a run on three hits. The only run came on a swipe of home by Tommy Medica … Veteran right-hander Chris Smith pitched well in his second start of the year. The 34-year-old pitched six shutout innings, allowing just four hits, walking one and striking out seven. The well-traveled veteran was touched up hard in his season debut, and has a 6.10 ERA in 10.1 innings … LHP Chris Rearick took the loss, allowing a two-run double to former Padre Brooks Conrad. The 27-year-old lefty didn’t record an out and allowed two runs. Rearick has a 7.20 ERA in five innings of work this year.

Prospect Watch: Water is wet, hot dogs are delicious and Travis Jankowski gets on base. The Missions’ lead-off man hit his first home run of the year to extend his on-base streak to 27 games. The former supplemental first rounder has arguably been the best position player in the Padres’ system in 2015. The 23-year-old out of Stony Brook is hitting .345/.433/.440 with a home run, eight RBIs and 13 stolen bases … RHP Justin Hancock put up five shutout frames, but was erratic, as we walked five. The 24-year-old continues to outperform his peripherals, as he has solid 2.63 ERA, but opposing batters are hitting .288 off of Hancock. Hancock also has an unimpressive 27:17 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Prospect Watch The TinCaps gave up a season-high 16 runs on 19 hits. LHP Thomas Dorminy was knocked around Parkview Field, as the lefty allowed eight earned runs in 3.1 innings. Dorminy, 22, had pitched well leading up to this start, as he had allowed just 2 earned runs in his previous 16.1 innings before Monday night … Franchy Cordero made his season debut in left field, and had a multi-hit game. Cordero had DH’ed the previous two games. It will remain to be seen if Cordero will return to shortstop in the near future … First baseman Trae Santos hit his second homer of the year and drove in a pair of runs. Santos also recorded two outs on the mound without allowing a run. The 2013 17th rounder has produced a solid .241/.343/.437 with a pair of home runs in 26 games … The TinCaps pitching staff has a Midwest League worst 5.19 ERA … Roster Move: The Tincaps sent INF Nick Vilter to extended spring training and replaced him with INF Chase Jensen. Vilter, 21, had a rough time in Fort Wayne, hitting just .106/.232/.170 in 16 games. He was a 9th round pick in 2014. Jensen, 24, hit .161 in 16 games last season for the TinCaps, but adds some defensive flexibility around the infield.
Editor's Note After Kevin filed his report Sam Geaney, the Padres Director of Player Development, responded to a question from MadFriars that the move of Cordero to the outfield is not yet permanent and that the organization wants to explore exposing him to other positions.
