MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: July 3

Colin Rea finds out the PCL can be a tough place to pitch. Hunter Renfroe has another multi-hit game. The Storm's 6'9" lefty doesn't have a bad debut and the TinCaps keep rolling. The Dust Devils bats break out while the AZL Padres' ones continue to sleep.

Fresno Grizzlies 9 - Chihuahuas 5

Key Statistics:CF Abraham Almonte 3-5, 2B; DH Cody Decker 1-4, 2B, BB; RF Jake Goebbert 1-3, 2 BB; 1B Tommy Medica 2-3, 2B; RBI, BB3B Rocky Gale 1-4; RHP Colin Rea 2.1 IP 6 H 5 R 4 ER 4 BB 3 K; RHP Cory Mazzoni (L, 1-3) 1.1 IP 3 H 4 R 4 ER BB 2 K.

Prospect Watch:Fresno broke open a tie game in the ninth as the Grizzlies plated four runs and seriously damaged Cory Mazzoni’s ERA...Colin Rea had a 1.08 ERA in 75 innings in the Texas League and in his Triple-A debut discovered the “magic” of the PCL; the ball is going to carry a little more and the hitters have been around the block a few times. Rea lasted two and a third innings. He is a much better pitcher than he showed tonight, but every pitcher is going to have an adjustment period with this jump...After going his entire five year professional career as a catcher, Rocky Gale has appeared and started at both second and third base. He is one of the better defensive catchers in the system - and is hitting again this year at .308/.349/.385 - so maybe this will help him get to the big leagues.

Missions 4 - Springfield Cardinals 2

Key Statistics:RF Hunter Renfroe 2-4; CF ALberth Martiniez 1-4, 2B, 3 RBI; 1B Luis Domoromo 2-4; , 2B Taylor Lindsey, 1-3, 2 BB; RHP Elliot Morris (W, 3-7) 7 H 2 R 2 ER BB K; RHP Tayron Guerrero (S,8) 1.0 IP BB K.

Prospect Watch:The Missions opened the second half of the Texas League season with a strong outing by Elliot Morris, who had his second straight quality start after struggling in June with a 7.11 ERA. Morris has a big fastball, it’s just a case of locating it...San Antonio took advantage of three errors by the Cardinals in the fifth, and a three run double by Martiniez, to score all four of their runs...Hunter Renfroe was the player of the month for June and with two hits today he had fourth straight multi-hit game. He has now pushed his season total to .251/.310/.395 after being at .225/.283/.324 on June 2...The “Angry Stork” is now eight for ten in save opportunities and has a 37/17 strikeout-to-base-on-balls ratio in 31.1 innings.

Visalia Rawhide 5 - Storm 3

Key Statistics:1B Marcus Davis 1-3, BB; SS Chase Jensen 1-4, 3 RBI; 3B Ricardo Valenzuela 2-4, 2B; LHP Brad Wieck (L, 0-1) 5.0 IP 4 H 2 R ER 2 BB 5 K HR.

Prospect Watch:Six-foot nine lefty Brad Wieck made his Cal League debut and didn’t have a bad outing. The twenty-three year old lefty that came over in the Alex Torres trade is definitely someone to keep an eye on...Tonight’s loss was the Storm’s fourth in five games...Chase Jensen, after struggling at Fort Wayne with a .197 batting average is getting a chance to play shortstop everyday with the promotion of Jose Rondon had a three-run home tonight and is now hitting .333 in his first four games.

TinCaps 1- Dayton Dragons 0

Key Statistics:CF Michael Gettys 1-4, 2B; LF Nick Torres 2-4, 2B; RF Franmil Reyes 1-4; 3B Luis Tejada 1-2, 2B, 2 BB; C Jose Ruiz 1-3, BB; RHP Ernesto Montas (W, 7-5) 7.0 IP 6 H 0 R 0 ER BB 3 K; RHP Colby Blueberg (S,11) 2.0 IP 3 K.

Prospect Watch:Kevin Charity noted in the Daily Farm Report the other day that all of us at MadFriars thought the TinCaps would easily be the worst team in the system but they have now won 10 out of 13 games and are sitting atop the Midwest League Eastern standings for the second half. They may end up being the best...Ruiz’s single in the second inning to score Tejada was the games only run...One reason for the surge has been the improvement in pitching and the defense. Both LF Nick Torres and CF Michael Gettys threw out runners to give Fort Wayne six outfield assists in the past five games and SS Ruddy Giron has tightened up the infield...After a bad outing against West Michigan on June 1, Montas has given up one earned run or less in his past five starts - and in the one outlier he gave up two....Today’s two inning save by Blueberg, who was featured here earlier this week, was his second consecutive one where he went more than one inning. He is second overall in the organization with 11...Also, check out Chris Goff, of the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette’s blog on the progress of Josh VanMeter, who is beginning baseball activities.

Dust Devils 9 - Everett AcquaSox 2

Key Statistics:CF Justin Pacchioli 0-2, 3 BB, 3 SB; LF Jose Carlos Urena 1-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, BB, SB; DH Carlos Belen 1-3, BB; 3B Nick Vilter 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI; 1B Ty France 3-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB; C A.J. Kennedy 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI; RF Mason Smith 1-2, 2 BB; RHP Walker Lockett (W, 1-0) 6.0 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER BB 6 K.

Prospect Watch:Walker Lockett is one of the four high school pitchers the Padres selected in the first five rounds of the 2012 draft, and along with “other” Walker Weickel is one of only two left. Lockett pitched well in his debut season but struggled with injuries in 2013 and 2014 and was sent down earlier this year after being hit hard in four starts in Fort Wayne this season. In his fourth start for Tri-City he continued to throw well and now has 22 strikeout in 21 innings against only eight walks....Former SDSU star Ty France had his best night as a pro...A big night also by former Lehigh star Justin Pacchioli with three stolen bases as he pushed his on-base percentage over .400.

For further reading on the Dust Devils, see the Tri-City Herald.

AZL Royals 7 - AZL Padres 3

Key Statistics:CF Aldemar Burgos 2-4, SB; 1B Jonas Lantigua 1-4, 2B, RBI; RHP Jean Garcia (L, 0-2) 3.2 IP 6 H 7 R 6 ER 4 BB 2 K.

Prospect Watch:The AZL Padres dropped their fifth game in a row and there wasn’t much good news coming out of the desert...Zach Risendorf, who the Padres took in the sixth round of last year’s draft, struggled today with three strikeouts in four at-bats. He is 1-14 in his first four games...Despite the loss today, Jean Garcia out of the Dominican Republic is someone to watch. At six-foot five and a very solid 225 pounds he is only 18 and has some “stuff”.
