MadFriars Daily Farm Report: July 23

The Chihuahuas won Thursday night, taking the series against Sacramento. Fort Wayne and Tri-City got wins that featured big games from each club’s shortstop. Meanwhile, both San Antonio and Lake Elsinore were shut out in uninspiring performances.

Chihuahuas 5 – Sacramento River Cats 2

Key Statistics: 2B Casey McElroy, 2-for-4, 2B; 3B Cody Decker, 1-for-2, HR (18), RBI; RHP Daniel McCutchen, (W, 6-5) 6.1IP, 4H, ER, K; RHP Jay Jackson, (S, 6) 2IP, H, 3K.

Prospect Watch: 3B Cody Decker hit his organization-leading 18th homer in the road victory for El Paso. Decker continues to hit for impressive power, and has looked more comfortable at third base. It will be interesting to see what happens with him as September approaches … Decker was replaced by 3B Will Middlebrooks, who was recently demoted to El Paso. He went 0-for-2 … RHP Jay Jackson picked up his sixth save, pitching two scoreless innings, while racking up three strikeouts. Jackson, 27 was signed by the Padres as a minor league free agent in the off-season. He has been the best reliever in a deep El Paso bullpen this season. Jackson has a 1.84 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 44 innings. He is also a perfect 6-for-6 in save opportunities this season.

Midland Rockhounds 7 – Missions 0

Key Statistics: SS Benji Gonzalez, 2-for-4, 2B; RHP Bryce Morrow, (L, 1-2) 5IP, 8H, 6ER, BB, 4K.

Prospect Watch: The Missions dropped their fourth straight game Thursday night. The club managed just four hits … SS Benji Gonzalez has been a nomad in the Padres system, as the utility man has suited up for four different squads within the Padres’ chain in 2015. Gonzalez had a successful stint in AAA, where he hit .315 in 54 at-bats. Gonzalez had a single and a double for his first multi-hit game as a Mission. The former Pirate draft pick is hitting .309/.380/.464 in 31 games this year.

High Desert Mavericks 5 – Storm 0

Key Statistics: LF Donovan Tate, 2-for-3, SB (10); RHP Kyle Lloyd, (L, 5-7) 5IP, 6H, 4ER, BB, 3K.

Prospect Watch: The Storm opened up a homestand with a miserable performance, as the club only had four singles … LF Donavan Tate had a good game, with two singles and his 10th stolen base of the year. Tate has played well lately, and the former 3rd overall pick is hitting .294 with two homers in his last 10 games. Tate is hitting .225/.312/.358 with a career-high four homers in 57 games with the Storm this season.

TinCaps 7 – Lake County Captains 1

Key Statistics: CF Michael Gettys, 4-for-6, 2B, 3RS; 2B Luis Urias, 3-for-4, 2RS. 2RBI; SS Ruddy Giron, 4-for-5, 2B, RS, 2RBI; LF Franchy Cordero, 2-for-4, BB; 3B Luis Tejada, 2-for-5; C Jose Ruiz, 2-for-5, RS; RHP Chris Huffman (W, 4-6) 6IP, 3H, BB, 4K.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps ended a five-game losing streak by pounding out 19 hit -- although 16 of them were singles … SS Ruddy Giron had four hits Thursday, including a double. Giron has struggled in July, with a meager slash line of .213/.220/.313 in July. Giron’s amazing start may have been unsustainable as he has been overmatched over the last month. Perhaps Giron is making the adjustments necessary to continue his remarkable season … CF Michael Gettys had his second four-hit game of the year, with three singles and his 23rd double of the year. Gettys is hitting .295/.364/.397 in July – his best month of the season. Gettys is still striking out at an alarming, and seemingly unfathomable rate. Gettys leads the Midwest League with 117 punchouts, with just 17 walks. Roster Moves: LHP Travis Radke was promoted to Fort Wayne from Tri-City. RHP Nick Monroe was also brought up from the AZL Padres. The TinCaps placed RHP Seth Lucio on the 7 day-DL.

Dust Devils 6 – Vancouver Canadians 4

Key Statistics: RF Justin Pacchioli, 2-for-5, 3B, RBI; SS Peter Van Gansen, 3-for-5, 2B, 3B, RS, 2RBI, SB (5); DH Ty France, 2-for-4, 2RS; CF Rod Boykin, 3-for-4, 2B, RBI; RHP Trevor Megill (W, 1-0) 2IP, 2H, 2ER, BB, 3k.

Prospect Watch: At 20-15, the Dust Devils have the best winning percentage in the Padres’ organization. The team is a game out of first with three games left in the first half … SS Peter Van Gansen was just a homer shy of the cycle, and stole his fifth bag for good measure. Van Gansen, a 12th rounder this year, continues to be the best player on a good Dust Devils squad. Van Gansen is hitting .312/.386/.424 overall … CF Rod Boykin had a three-hit game for the second time in the last three games. Boykin is 7-for-15 with three runs and 4 RBI. Boykin has posted a solid .362 in the NWL this year, although he has struck out 41 times in 111 at-bats. Boykin has little power, but can be a nuisance on the basepaths with his elite speed. He will need to make more contact to progress through the Padres’ system.

AZL Padres 6 – AZL Royals 4

Key Statistics: RF Alan Garcia, 1-for-2, 2B, BB, 2RBI; RHP Joel Linares, (W, 2-1) 5IP, 4H, R, 0ER, 4K; RHP Blake Rogers, (S, 4) IP, K.
