MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: August 1

The two best teams in the Padres’ system this year have been the Fort Wayne TinCaps and the Tri-City Dust Devils. Both clubs found the win column Saturday night. The Chihuahuas lost their second straight game, while San Antonio used a big inning to achieve a victory. The Storm lost another one on the road.

Reno Aces 8 – Chihuahuas 4

Key Statistics: CF Travis Jankowski, 2-for-5; SS Ramiro Pena, 2-for-4, BB, RBI, RS; LF Alex Dickerson, 3-for-5, HR (9), RS, 2RBI; LHP Jason Lane (L, 8-7), 7IP, 12H, 8ER; BB, 4K.

Prospect Watch: 38-year-old LHP Jason Lane had an interesting outing, to say the least. The wily veteran pitched seven innings, but allowed eight earned runs and three home runs, all while throwing 132 pitches – a season high. Lane has struggled mightily in July, with an 8.31 in five starts. Lane has soaked up a lot of innings and provided leadership, but another big league appearance in 2015 doesn’t seem likely … CF Travis Jankowski had two more hits, and has hit safely in all nine games he has played in the PCL. His hitting streak sits at 13, if you count his last few games in San Antonio. Jankowski, 24, has a ridiculous slash-line of .486/.524/.649 since his promotion to El Paso. Overall, Jankowski is hitting .335/.410/.429 in 82 games between San Antonio and El Paso.

Prospect Watch: : The Missions scored all five runs in the sixth to win this one … RF Hunter Renfroe continued his assault on the Texas League, as the big righty smashed his 14th dinger. Renfroe has 12 homers in his last 54 games, and has improved his slugging percentage each month. Over his last ten games, Renfroe is hitting .316, with four homers. Renfroe will need seven more homers to match last year’s total … RHP Justin Hancock took the no-decision, allowing four earned runs and 10 hits through five innings of work. Hancock has stayed healthy this year, and has a solid, but not particularly spectacular 2015 campaign. The 9th rounder in 2011 has a 3.70 ERA in 21 starts.

Prospect Watch: The Storm lost their fifth straight Saturday night, falling behind early to the rival Quakes … RHP Zech Lemond has had a brutal couple of months, and his run of poor outings continued Saturday night. The former Rice Owl couldn’t escape the third inning, after allowing four earned runs, including three long balls. Lemond, 22, has a 7.94 ERA since June, and the Cal League is hitting a robust .320 against the righty. The Storm have had trouble with starting pitching all year ...

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps won their fifth straight, including their second consecutive walk-off victory; RHP Dinelson Lamet finally pitched six innings – he had five consecutive outings where he pitched exactly five innings. Lamet was solid once again, allowing three earned runs, while walking two and striking out five. Lamet has displayed the best stuff on the TinCaps roster, and the Midwest League is hitting just .207 against the 23-year-old … Catcher Jose Ruiz had a good game at the plate, with a pair of hits, as well as two RBI. Ruiz, 20, is a former bonus baby, having signed for $1.1 million out of Venezuela back in 2011. Ruiz has been praised for his work behind the plate, and has thrown out 37% of runners attempting to steal this season. Ruiz hasn’t done much offensively throughout his professional career, but he is hitting .343 in his last ten games. For the season, Ruiz is hitting .219/.245/.245.

In two starts in the great city of Pasco, De Horta has allowed just an earned run over 11.2 innings. More impressively, De Horta has only walked two batters in his two starts. In 2014, De Horta allowed 68 walks in 77.1 innings.
