MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: August 29

El Paso misses a chance to pick up a game and San Antonio loses an opportunity to win one. Fort Wayne suffers a rare back-to-back loss and Lake Elsinore goes down again. Tri-City wins one in the rain and the AZL Padres have a night to forget.

Oklahoma City Dodgers 4 - Chihuahuas 1

Key Statistics:RF Hunter Renfroe 2-5; LF Alex Dickerson 1-3, 2B; 1B Jake Goebbert 2-4, RBI; PH Ramiro Pena 1-1, 2B; RHP Daniel McCutchen (L, 8-8) 7.0 IP 5H 2 R 2 ER BB 7 K HR; RHP Marcos Mateo 1.0 IP 2 H 2 R ER; RHP Jay Jackson 1.0 IP K.

Prospect Watch:Despite leading the organization in home runs (20) and RBI (71), Cody Decker has struggled for regular playing time with the promotion of Hunter Renfroe from Double-A. Jake Goebbert, Alex Dickerson and Rymer Liriano all have posted big numbers this month, and Decker has been limited to only four starts in the past nine games...Regular third baseman Will Middlebrooks has been slumping in August - .227/.266/.318 - so maybe that is one reason we saw Cody at third tonight. However Decker has had the worst month of his season with a .156/.280/.281 batting average coming into the game tonight and was 0-3 with a walk...Alex Dickerson hit his 35th double of the season which puts him in fifth place overall in the PCL. In his first year in Triple-A Dickerson should garner some post-season awards as he has been the most consistent Padres’ prospect throughout the season...Another good outing by Daniel McCutchen, one of the trio of “thirtysomething” pitchers for El Paso, despite taking the loss. In the second half he has an ERA of 2.68 in 53.2 innings which is outstanding in the PCL.

Corpus Christi Hooks 8 - Missions 6

Key Statistics:2B Benji Gonzalez 3-5, 2 2B, RBI; CF Alberth Martinez 2-4, 2B, HR (11), 2 RBI; DH Yeison Ascencio 2-4; RHP Ronald Herrera 4.2 IP 9 H 6 R 5 ER 4 K 2 HR; RHP Eric Yardley (l, 0-1) 1.0 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER 2 HR; RHP Michael Dimock 1.0 IP 2 K.

Prospect Watch:Eric Yardley had a tough debut in Double-A. He gave up a pair of back-to-back solo home runs after only allowing two in 59.2 innings in Lake Elsinore where he had a 2.72 ERA...With a pair of hits tonight Yeison Ascencio is hitting .379/.396/.495. He has only struck out seven times in 104 plate appearances and he has also walked once this month. The man can make contact. He has only struck out 39 times in 477 plate appearances this year...Seven of the Hooks’ eight runs were on home runs...The Missions have lost eight of their past nine games...El Paso is still two and half games behind Las Vegas in the PCL South in there race for the playoffs.

Lancaster Jethawks 6 - Storm 2

Key Statistics: RF Nick Schulz 2-4, HR (12), RBI, BB; 1B Marcus Davis 2-4, 2 2B; DH Matthew Chavez 2-4, 2B; 2B Ricardo Valenzuela 2-4; CF Donavan Tate 1-3, RBI, BB; RHP Kyle Lloyd 5.0 IP 7 H 6 R 6 ER 2 BB 5 K 2 HR.

Prospect Watch:The Storm lost, which puts them within two games of being 40 games under .500 so let’s focus on some positives - enough bashing, they are just not having a good season...Tate had an outfield assist and reached base twice. He has looked much better in the field and at the plate even though the numbers don’t show it yet...Nick Schulz now is tied for the team lead in home runs with 12 and has a .342 on-base percentage for the year...Last year Kyle Lloyd led the organization in strikeouts and he is this year too with 125. The difference is he is in the Cal League as opposed to the Midwest League where mistakes come back to bite pitchers more. He has a 4.67 ERA and his stuff is probably better suited to relief, where he can rely on a two pitch combination as opposed to being a starter.

Lake County Captains 5 - TinCaps 4 completed early: rain

Key Statistics:2B Luis Urias 2-2, RBI, BB, SB; RF Franmil Reyes 2-3, RBI; DH Josh VanMeter 2-3; 3B Luis Tejada 2-3, HR (3), 2 RBI; RHP Dinelson Lamet (L, 5-7) 1.0 IP 2 H R ER BB K.

Prospect Watch:Rain stopped both teams from playing the final three innings as the TinCaps dropped their second consecutive game; something they hadn’t done since late July. Tejada’s home run was the only extra-base hit of the nine that Fort Wayne had tonight...After starting off red-hot in July, Urias has slowed down in August hitting .224/.318/.289...According to Chris Goff of the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette Lamet was pulled after one inning because of concerns by the big club on the number of innings he has thrown this year. The goal is to get him to the playoffs with no restrictions.

For further reading on the TinCaps, see the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette.

Dust Devils 9 Everett AcquaSox 3 rain shortened

Key Statistics:RF Justin Pacchioli 2-3, 2B, 3 RBI, BB; SS Peter Van Gansen 2-3, BB; DH Mason Smith 2-3; 3B Carlos Belen 1-4, HR (6) RBI; 2B Mitch Morales 1-2, 2B; RBI, BB; CF Rod Boykin 1-2, 2 RBI, BB; RHP Angel Mejia (W, 5-3) 5 H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB 4 K 2 HR.

Prospect Watch:Another game that was called early on account of rain, this time with a happy ending...Good game for the Dust Devils bats which had been hitting .222 this moth....On the season Mejia has a 43/20 strikeout-to-base-on-balls ratio...After hitting .308 and .327 in his first two months of pro ball Van Gansen’s tank is starting to run on empty a little with a .174 batting average in August coming into the game...The Dust Devils are three games above .500.

For further reading on the Dust Devils, see the Tri-City Herald.

AZL Rangers 13 - AZL Padres 1

Key Statistics:DH River Stevens 1-3, BB; 1B Jonas Lantigua 1-3, BB;RHP Austin Smith (L, 0-3) 2.0 IP 5 H 5 R 5 ER BB 2 K.

Prospect Watch:River Stevens had his first game back on rehab after severely injuring his ankle in Lake Elsinore. Austin Smith, the Padres’ top draft pick in this year’s draft continues his up and down debut. Then again it’s an Arizona League game where we should all look at the pitching statistics a little less seriously than we would for a Spring Training game.
