A group of 59 Padres prospects reported to the Peoria Sports Complex on Monday to kick off the 2015 Fall Instructional League. The annual development program allows coaches and coordinators to spend concentrated time working with young and rehabbing players, and will allow Sam Geaney and his group to continue their efforts to instill their organizational philosophies.
The group will include 11 players signed internationally this summer who have not previously appeared stateside, including Venezuelan shortstop Kelvin Melean and Mexican pitcher Andres Munoz, the two 16-year-olds who took home the largest signing bonuses the club handed out this year.
Many of the club’s top picks from the 2015 draft are also at the complex, including teenage pitchers Austin Smith, Jacob Nix and Jordan Guerrero, as well as early position picks Austin Allen, listed at catcher, first baseman Brad Zunica, and outfielders Aldemar Burgos, Josh Magee, Justin Pacchioli and Alan Garcia.
There will also be a group of rehabbing pitchers in camp, including Ryan Butler and Elliot Morris, who will get work in before crossing over to the Arizona Fall League. Lefties Ryan Atwood and Jeff Ibarra and righty Mitch Watrous will all get in their first game action since undergoing surgery.
