RD Spiehs had been pitching at Norwich, the Giants Double-A affiliate in the Eastern League.
Spiehs had appeared in 39 games, all as a reliever, and had posted a 2-5 record with seven saves and a 3.28 ERA. He has consistently gotten better as the year has progressed and has allowed just five earned runs in 40 innings.
Spiehs was acquired from San Francisco as the player to be named later in a deal that sent pitcher Matt Herges from San Diego to San Francisco in exchange for minor league pitcher Clay Hensley and a Player To Be Named Later.
Spiehs was a 33rd round draft pick by the Giants in 2001 out of the University of Nebraska. He is 23 years old.
