LPRandy Wolf 5IP 4ER 5H 5BB 3K ERA: 3.37
Jake Peavy, 22, allowed just 3 hits over seven strong innings to secure the win. He allowed Marlon Byrd's double in the first inning and Placido Polanco's single in the third before giving way to the bullpen in the eighth. Peavy walked four and struck out five, throwing 114 pitches.
Phil Nevin hit a three-run shot, his third of the season, off All-Star Randy Wolf in the fifth inning. Wolf got the first two outs before giving up singles to Sean Burroughs and Mark Loretta. Nevin hit an 0-2 pitch to the right-center stands to increase San Diego's lead to 6-0.
The Padres took and early 2-0 lead in this one in the first off Wolf, who walked two of the first three batters. Nevin lined an RBI single to right, scoring Gary Matthews Jr. Loretta also scored on the play when right fielder Bobby Abreu mishandled the ball for an error.
The Padres tacked on another run when Brian Buchanon scored on an error by shortstop Jimmy Rollins. With Buchanon on third, Lou Merloni stole second and the ball tipped off Rollins' glove, allowing Buchanon to stroll in making the score 3-0.
The Phillies finally got on the board in the ninth. Tyler Houston and Jimmy Rollins each hit an RBI single in the ninth for the Phillies. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt by reliever Jay Witasick led to two more runs, including Ricky Ledee's sacrifice fly.
Joe Roa (1-2) faces off against Carlos Silva (3-1) in game 2 of the doubleheader. This was the first scheduled doubleheader at Veterans Stadium since Aug. 10, 1985, against St. Louis.
