MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: April 15

El Paso wins its opener while San Antonio's bats fall silent on the road. David Jay was in Lake Elsinore for the Storm going down in defeat and Fort Wayne keeps on rolling.

Chihuahuas 10 - Reno Aces 3

Key Statistics: 2B Carlos Asuaje 2-5 2 SB; LF Jose Pirela 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB; C Austin Hedges 1-3, 2B, BB; RF Hunter Renfroe 3-5, 2B, RBI; 3B Ryan Schimpf 2-4, HR (1) 2 RBI; SS Nick Noonan 2-4, 2 RBI; PH Alex Dickerson 1-1; RHP Daniel McCutchen W, 2-0) 6.0 IP 8 H 3 R 3 ER 6 Ks; RHP Leonel Campos 2.0 IP BB 5 Ks.

Prospect Watch: After a 1-5 road trip, El Paso got back on the right track winning their home opener…The trade for Craig Kimbrel appears to keep paying dividends as Carlos Asuaje has started off red-hot with a .348/.348/.609 slash line in his first 23 plate appearances.  The organization believes the left-handed hitting infielder can also play short, which could be his ticket to the major leagues as a utility guy…Last year at this time, Austin Hedges was hitting .438 with El Paso. He’s not quite as hot this season, but .333/.400/.500 in 19 plate appearances is very good.  This year, look for the Padres to keep him in Triple-A longer than 21 games.  A good bet is the next time he comes up it will as the every day catcher…Hunter Renfroe had his first mult-hit game of the year…Daniel McCutchen had a much better outing against Reno tonight than he did on the road last Friday when he gave up six earned runs in five innings.

Springfield Cardinals 2 - Missions 0

Key Statistics: C Rocky Gale 2-3; RHP Cesar Vargas 7.0 IP H 7 Ks; RHP Ramon Benjamin (L, 0-1) 2 H 2 R 2 ER HR.

Prospect Watch: Not a great night for the Missions’ offense as they were held to only six hits, all singles, which wasted a great performance by starting pitcher Cesar Vargas. Vargas pitched seven shutout innings before his replacement gave up a lead-off double followed by a home run…Vargas, 23, signed with the Padres as a minor league free agent after spending seven years in the Yankee organization.  New York used the Mexican native primarily as a relief pitcher, but with the dearth of starting pitching in the upper levels of the minors for San Diego, look for him to stay in the rotation in San Antonio.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 5  - Storm 3

Key Statistics: 2B Luis Urias 2-4; 1B Trae Santos 2-4, 2B, RBI ; C Jose Ruiz 2-4, 2B, RBI; RHP Michael Kelly (L, 0-1) 5.0 IP 5 H 4 R 3 ER BB 2 Ks HR; RHP T.J. Weir 2.0 IP K.

TinCaps 10 - South Bend Cubs 3

Key Statistics: SS Peter Van Gansen 2-4, RBI; CF Michael Gettys 2-5, 2B, RBI SB (4); C Austin Allen 2-4, RBI, BB; RF Luis Tejada 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, SB; DH Kodie Tidwell 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI; RHP Jacob Nix 3.0 IP 2 H R ER K; LHP Logan Allen (W, 1-0) 3.0 IP 4 H R ER BB 4 Ks; LHP Will Headean (S,1) 3 H R ER BB 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch: This year, we believed the TinCaps would be the most entertaining team to watch in the Padres’ system and ESPN’s Keith Law also gave them some love in his recent column. So far they have not disappointed.  While most of the attention is correctly focused on their pitching, their offense has been much better than expected with a team slash line of .292/.366/.439…Michael Gettys still has to fight his tendency to overswing, but so far there has been much more positive than negative.  In eight games, he has four RBI and four stolen bases in five attempts.  Yes, he also has 12 strikeouts, but four of them were in the home opener…In the first game that Peter Van Gansen started at shortstop and led off, he had positive outcomes in both areas. He’s hitting .429/.485/.464 in his first 32 plate appearances…Finally, I enjoy writing this just because it’s fun to look at.  In his first 33 plate appearances Austin Allen is hitting .655/.676/.862…The pitching is great, but there will be a lot more to watch this summer in the Summit City besides the guys on the bump.
