Padres Win in Twelve

Jake Peavy pitched nine innings allowing zero runs on five hits, while facing the high powered Cincinnati Reds attack. An obvious win you say. Wrong.

The San Diego Padres could not score against starter Jason Bale or the bevy of relievers they faced and the game saw extra innings. It wasn't until the 12th inning that the game was decided.

Kim Lewis was dead on in her Series Preview when she said Jason Bale would pitch only 3-4 innings. Bale pitched 4-2/3 innings, allowing five hits but no runs. In that inning, the Padres tried a double steal with one out, but Brian Buchanon, the trailing runner, was thrown out at second by Kelly Stinnett. Rondell White would be stranded at third after a leadoff single as Scott Sullivan replace Bale and got Ramon Vasquez to fly out to right.

Jake Peavy did not allow a runner to reach second base until the ninth inning. Peavy walked Russell Branyan to start the inning, Ray Olmedo pinch ran for Branyan, and was sacrificed to second by D'Angelo Jimenez. Barry Larkin followed with a single to right. Gary Matthews Jr. came up throwing and nabbed Olmedo at home, with a two count to spare, to keep the game scoreless.

The game wasn't decided until the twelfth inning. With one out, Reds reliever Brian Reith, the seventh pitcher used by the Reds, walked Sean Burroughs on four pitches. Ryan Klesko followed with another walk on four straight pitches bringing up Padres centerfielder Mark Kotsay. Kotsay nailed a pitch off the wall in centerfield ending the game as Burroughs came around to score. The game winner by Kotsay was the first extra base hit of the day. Kotsay ended the day 3-4 with two walks.

Rod Beck pitched a scoreless top half of the twelfth to get the win.

The Reds lost their fifth in a row while the Padres ended a three-game losing streak.
