MadFriars San Diego Padres Daily Prospect Report: May 20

El Paso nearly makes a big comeback and San Antonio rides a big inning. Kevin Charity is in Lake Elsinore and Jacob Nix doesn't get the win, but is lights out in Fort Wayne.

Round Rock Express 14 - Chihuahuas 10

Key Statistics: 2B/3B Yangervis Solarte 3-3, 2B, 3B, BB; PH/LF/1B/3B Ryan Schimpf 2-4, RBI; DH Jabari Blash 1-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, BB; C Rocky Gale 3-4, RBI; SS Nick Noonan 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI; RHP Carlos Pimentel (L, 2-3) 1.0 IP 11 H 10 R 10 ER BB K HR; LHP Frank Garces 1.0 IP H 2 K.

Prospect Watch:  Despite being down 12-0 going into the bottom of the second, the home team made a go of it and nearly made it all the way back…Blash in his debut in El Paso hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth..Solarte is now 5-7, with a walk and three extra-base hit two games into his rehab..James Loney played the outfield for the first time since 2007 tonight with a cameo in right..still not sure how Pimentel stayed in the game as long as he did…Casey McElroy had his first appearance in five days after being knocked out with the flu and was 1-5…Noonan could also be a candidate for a call-up with a .307/.328/.430 slash line and has made only two errors in 33 games at shortstop…tonight’s loss broke a six game winning streak for the Chihuahuas.

Missions 5 - Frisco RoughRiders 4

Key Statistics: CF Auston Bousfield 1-3, BB; 1B Mike Olt 1-3, HR (4), 3 RBI, BB; 2B Taylor Lindsey 1-3, BB; 3B Gabriel Quintana 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, SB; RHP Kyle Lloyd 4.0 IP 4 H 3 R 3 ER 4 BB K; RHP Rafael De Paula (W, 1-1) 1.2 IP H R ER; RHP Jason Jester (S, 6) 1.0 IP 2 K.

Prospect Watch: Frisco held the Missions scoreless for eight out of the nine frames, the problem for the RoughRiders is that San Antonio put up five runs in the sixth off of Olt’s three-run home run and Quintana’s two-run double later in the inning. The victory broke a four game losing streak to move the Missions’ record to 13 and 27, which is the worse in the Texas League…After hitting .213/.300/.377 in April, Olt has picked it up in May with a .333/.471/.500 slash line…Lloyd made his first start of the year as the organization continues to search for upper-level starters.

Storm 5 - Bakersfield Blaze 4

Kevin Charity was at the game for MadFriars.  You can read his account of Dinelson Lamet’s most recent start here and also check out today’s interview with Lamet by David Jay.

West Michigan Whitecaps 3 - TinCaps 1

Key Statistics: 2B Peter Van Gansen 1-3, BB; SS Ruddy Giron 2-4, 2B; RF Mason Smith 2-4; 3B Kodie Tidwell 2-4; RHP Jacob Nix 5.0 IP 3 H 5 K; RHP Austin Smith (L, 0-3) 5 H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB K HR.

Prospect Watch: Any time Jacob Nix takes the mound, his team is going to have a chance to win.  Nix threw five scoreless innings (57 pitches) and didn’t give up a run or an earned run for his second straight game.  In his last six starts he has given up a total of one earned run in twenty innings with today’s outing his longest of the year.  An indication of how a won-loss record doesn’t tell the whole story of evaluating a pitcher’s effectiveness, Nix has yet to record a win or a loss but has a 2.10 ERA in 25.2 innings against 24 strikeouts and five walks. In May the Midwest League has a batting average of .160 against him in four starts….Catcher Austin Allen was ejected in the third inning after striking out. Moments earlier, Allen had hammered a ball off the right-center field wall on the fly, but time had been called by home plate umpire. After posting a batting average of.460 in April, Austin has slumped to .205 in May…the loss moved the TinCaps to a single game above .500 for the season.

System Transactions

Jabari Blash was added to the El Paso roster and manager Rod Barajas is going to have to find at-bats for a group of players that are hitting .317 as a team.  How much are the Chihuahuas hitting?  Infielder Diego Gorris was sent to Extended Spring and he was hitting .365.

Bryan Verbitsky was placed on the 7-day disable list for the Storm and RHP Aaron Cressley was assigned to Extended Spring.
