MadFriars San Diego Padres Daily Prospect Report: May 27

The Chihuahuas traveled into Omaha to start a series and won the opening game on the strength of a Hunter Renfroe blast. The Missions struggled again, losing at home to Arkansas. Lake Elsinore received arguably the best pitching performance in the system this season while Fort Wayne won again on the road.

Chihuahuas 3, Omaha Storm Chasers 2

Alex Dickerson Watch: 1-for-3, BB, 2 RS -- extended hitting streak to 25 games. Batting .409 on the season.

Key Statistics: 2B Carlos Asuaje, 2-for-4, BB; RF Hunter Renfroe, 2-for-4, HR (10), 2 RBI; RHP Daniel McCutchen, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 K; RHP Leonel Campos, (BS, 1)(W, 1-1) IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB; RHP Jose Dominguez (S, 4) IP, K.

Prospect Watch: El Paso scored the winning run in the ninth on Hunter Renfroe’s organization-leading 10th home run of the year ... Renfroe has continued to flash his power potential, as the former first-rounder has five homers in his last 11 games. Renfroe’s power is undeniable but he has not drawn a walk in three weeks, while striking out 13 times in that time span. Despite the lack of walks, Renfroe has a .927 OPS in 44 games in 2016 ... RHP Daniel McCutchen had his best outing of 2016, pitching six shutout innings without allowing a walk. McCutchen gave up nine earned runs his last time out but was able to limit the damage in Omaha. After a solid 3.60 ERA in El Paso last season, McCutchen has allowed opposing hitters to bat .342 against him, resulting in an inflated ERA of 6.79 in ten starts this season.

Arkansas Travelers 7, Missions 1

Prospect Watch: John Conniff was back at it for more Missions baseball and BBQ. Read his game report here

Storm 3, Stockton Ports 0

Key Statistics: 3B Josh VanMeter, 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RS; DH Luis Tejada, 2-for-4, RBI; RHP T.J. Weir, 7 IP, 3 H, BB, 12 K; RHP Yimmi Brasoban (S, 5) IP, 3 K.

Prospect Watch: T.J. Weir has spent most of his professional career pitching out of the bullpen, although after Friday’s performance, he should remain in the Storm’s rotation for the foreseeable future. The righty from Ball State pitched seven shutout innings, striking out a career-high 12 hitters in the victory. More impressively, Weir only needed 89 pitches and walked just one batter. Weir lowered his ERA to 1.45 in 15 appearances, including three starts this season ... Yimmi (or Jimmy depending on the publication) Brosoban pitched a scoreless ninth to record his fifth save of the season. Brosoban spent some time the disabled list with a tired arm earlier this month but looks to have no ill effects. Brosoban, 21, has not allowed a run in 10.2 innings in 2016.

TinCaps 3, Lake County Captains 2

Key Statistics: SS Kodie Tidwell, 2-for-5, SB (4), RS, 2B; C Austin Allen, 3-for-4, RS, RBI; RF Jhonatan Pena, 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI; RHP Jean Cosme (W, 4-2) 5 IP, 4 H, ER, 3 BB, 5 K; LHP Jerry Keel (H, 2) 3 IP, 3 H; RHP Trey Wingenter, (S, 4) IP, 2 H, ER, K.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps won their second straight on the road, once again receiving solid work from their pitching staff ... On the offensive side, outfielder Jhonatan Pena had his third consecutive multi-hit game and drove in two runs with a double. Pena is 6-for-12, with a homer, double and seven RBI. Pena, 21, had a nice year in the Arizona League a season ago and started in Fort Wayne due to the suspension of Jose Carlos Urena. Pena is hitting .200/.250/.276 for the TinCaps this season ... LHP Jerry Keel ate up the middle innings for Fort Wayne, pitching three scoreless innings. Keel, 22, signed an under-slot deal in the ninth round of the draft in 2015 and has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen in his professional career. Keel has a 0.66 ERA in seven May outings, although his strikeout-to-walk ratio isn’t too impressive.

Roster Moves: Another busy day, with clubs shuffling players back and forth. Here are the moves for Friday:

Lake Elsinore: Transferred RHP Blake Rogers to Fort Wayne, received RHP Ben Paullus from San Antonio.

Fort Wayne: Sent RHP Emmanuel Ramirez to extended spring training.
