Chihuahuas 8 – Sacramento River Cats 3
Key Stats: RHP Jeremy Guthrie 6 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K (W, 3-5); CF Manuel Margot 3-4, RS; 2B Carlos Asuaje 2-4, RS; LF Alex Dickerson 1-3, RS, RBI; RF Hunter Renfroe 2-4, HR (12), 2B, 2 RS, 3 RBI; 1B Jose Pirela 1-4, HR (1), 3 RBI.
Prospect Watch: Alex Dickerson's hitting streak was already at a team record 28 games entering tonight's game. In true baseball fashion, Dickerson hit two screaming line drives that were both caught in center. In the eighth he came up and hit a swinging bunt that traveled all of 30 feet but legged it out for an infield single and extend his hitting streak to 29 games… CF Manuel Margot finished off the month of May with eight hits in his final three games. After a disappointing April slash line of .270/.317/.392, Margot rebounded in May with .317/.394/.450. In 29 May games he posted 31 runs, 15 RBI, 13 BB, 14 strikeouts, and 11 stolen bases - exactly what you want to see out of a leadoff hitter… With James Loney now gone, the lone player on the roster with any significant experience first baseman is utilityman Josh Satin. Today first was occupied by Jose Pirela, who proceeded to hit his first homer of the season. If only playing at a power position could make everyone hit for more power.
Note: After serving a 50 game suspension, RHP Michael Dimock was activated by El Paso. Last season, Dimock was 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA, in 60 innings between Double-A and Triple-A before the suspension. He recorded an impressive 70 strikeout to six walk ratio. Notably, top prospect Ryan Butler, who also served a 50 game suspension, has not yet been assigned to a team.
NW Arkansas Naturals 4 - Missions 1
Key Stats: RHP Kyle Lloyd 3 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 3 K (L, 2-1); LF Nick Torres 2-4, 2B, RS; RF Yeison Asencio 2-4.
Prospect Watch: San Antonio fell to 16-34 on the season. The sad thing is the team shouldn’t be as bad as they are. Like the Padres, the Missions just can't seem to hit. Nearly the entire team is hitting 200+ points below their career average OPS. Mike Olt, a former major leaguer, is now hitting .252 in Double-A. Nelson Ward had nearly an .800 OPS in his career, but is now at .592 OPS in San Antonio. Yeison Asencio was tearing the cover off the ball in Triple-A and now is also hitting just .259 with almost no power. Bousfield has a .194 batting average, and one of the few prospects on the team other than Nick Torres, shortstop Jose Rondon, had another hitless day with his average dropping to .246
The Storm had the day off
TinCaps 5 – South Bend Cubs 1
Key Stats: RHP Thomas Dorminy 5 IP, 6 H, ER, 3 K; RHP Phil Maton 2 IP, 2 H, 5 K (S, 1); LF Kodie Tidwell 1-4, HR (2), RBI; CF Michael Gettys 1-3, BB; DH Nick Vitter 1-2, 2 RS, 2 BB; SS Rudy Giron 1-3, 3B, RS, RBI, BB.
Prospect Watch: Since allowing a run in his first game back from the disabled list, righty Phil Maton has now thrown 8.2 scoreless innings, striking out 14 while walking none. His five strikeouts on Tuesday - against eight batters faced - ties a career high. A starter in college, the Padres had hinted at putting him back in the rotation in 2016, but thus far a deep TinCaps rotation and an injury has derailed that notion. Provided he continues to dominate, it will be interesting to see if the Padres try to stretch him out and move him to the rotation in Lake Elsinore, or keep him in the pen and fast track him to the majors.
