MadFriars San Diego Padres Daily Prospect Report: June 23

Thursday marked the first day that all six stateside teams played on the same day. Offense was abundant throughout the system, as every team scored at least four runs. El Paso and San Antonio lost at home while the Storm took their show to the hitter haven known as The Hangar, losing in extras. Fort Wayne won on the road and Tri-City and the AZL Padres scored at will in wins.

Salt Lake Bees 10, Chihuahuas 5

Key Statistics: CF Manuel Margot, 2-for-5, SB (21); 2B Carlos Asuaje, 3-for-5, RS, RBI; C Austin Hedges, 2-for-2, HR (7), 2 RS, BB; LHP Frank Garces (L, 1-3) 4IP, 9H, 6ER, BB, 3K; RHP Derek Eitel, 2IP, H, 2K; RHP Michael Dimock, 1.2IP, 2H, 3ER, BB, K.

Prospect Watch: El Paso fell behind early and lost at home ... At this point catcher Austin Hedges is just biding time. The 23-year-old catcher has six consecutive multi-hit games, with four home runs during that stretch. El Paso is a kin to playing on the moon but Hedges’ offensive prowess is awfully impressive. In 82 at-bats Hedges is hitting .366/.422/.695, with seven homers. Hedges has six home runs in 55 at-bats in El Paso ... Outfielder Manuel Margot had a pair of hits and stole his 21st base of the season in the loss. Margot’s 21 steals place him second in the league. In his last 10 games, Margot has struck out just three times in 43 at-bats.

Midland RockHounds 9, Missions 6

Key Statistics: LF Nick Torres, 2-for-4, BB; RF Nick Schulz, 2-for-5, 2RS, 2B; 1B Luis Tejada, 2-for-2, RS, 2BB, RBI; RHP T.J. Weir (L, 2-3) 5IP, 9H, 9ER, 2BB, 3K.

Prospect Watch: San Antonio struggled once again, despite the offense carving out 10 hits and drawing 11 walks ... Newly promoted utility-man Luis Tejada had a pair of hits and drew two walks. The 23-year-old Dominican tore up Fort Wayne in April, struggled a bit in Lake Elsinore and was perfect Thursday in San Antonio. Between all three stops Tejada is hitting a decent .258/.341/.430 with seven homers ... RHP T.J. Weir got knocked around in Midland, allowing a career-high nine earned runs and a pair of homers in five innings. Weir has allowed 18 earned runs, 22 hits and 9 walks in his last three starts (14 innings). The former Ball State Cardinal has a 7.92 ERA in San Antonio this season.

Lancaster JetHawks 8, Storm 7

Key Statistics: 3B Josh VanMeter, 2-for-3, 3RS, HR (10), 3BB, RBI, SB (10); CF Michael Gettys, 2-for-5, 2B, RS, BB; DH Franmil Reyes, 2-for-5, RBI; RHP Walker Lockett, 4IP, 7H, 5ER, 2BB, 5K; LHP Brad Wieck, 2IP, 2BB, 3K; RHP Colby Blueberg (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) 1.1 IP, 2H, 2R, ER, BB, K.

Prospect Watch: Centerfielder Michael Gettys made his High-A debut and went 2-for-5, with a double and an RBI. Gettys had a remarkable first half in Fort Wayne, where he hit .304/.369/.416 with three homers and 24 stolen bases. Gettys should start to find the seats more in the hitter-friendly Cal League ... LHP Brad Wieck continues to look like a top-flight relief prospect. The 6’9 lefty had a clean inning in the California vs. Carolina League All-Star game, where he touched 95 mph with his fastball and displayed a nasty 85 mph slider with late life. Wieck has 52 strikeouts in 35.1 innings for the Storm this season. Wieck could be on the move to San Antonio in the near future ... Third baseman Josh VanMeter smacked his tenth homer of the season, stole his tenth base and drew three walks. VanMeter has a chance for a 20/20 season --- not bad for a guy who had three home runs in 600 at-bats coming into 2016. The former fifth-rounder has been one of the best stories in the system in 2016.

TinCaps 4, Bowling Green Hot Rods 0 (6)

Key Statistics: DH Brad Zunica, 1-for-3, HR (7), 3RBI; RF Jhonatan Pena, 2-for-3, HR (2), RBI; LHP Thomas Dorminy (W, 1-1) 6IP, 5H, BB, 2K.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps won a rain-shortened game, winning in six innings ... DH Brad Zunica slammed his team-leading seventh home run in the victory Thursday night. Last year’s 15th rounder has supplied power and strikeouts -- pretty much what was expected when he was drafted. If he can make more consistent contact, he has a chance to be a top prospect ... LHP Thomas Dorminy has proven that he can pitch well in Fort Wayne. The 24-year-old lefty has a 3.20 ERA in seven starts in Fort Wayne, a season after pitching to a 2.94 ERA in 25 games for the TinCaps. Dorminy was pounded in his brief time in Lake Elsinore this season. One would think he will get one more shot to prove himself in the Cal League this season.

Dust Devils 8, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 6

Key Statistics: LF Aldemar Burgos, 2-for-6, 2 RS, 3B, RBI; 3B Boomer White, 4-for-5, (3) 2B, 2RS, 4RBI; 2B Jose Savinon, 3-for-5, RS, RBI; RHP Angel Mejia, 4.2 IP, 7H, 5R, 3ER, BB, 4K; RHP Will Stillman (W, 1-0) 2IP, 2K; RHP Aaron Cressley (S, 2) IP, K.

Prospect Watch: 10th rounder Boomer White had a huge game for the Dust Devils, slugging three doubles and driving four runs in the win. White is 5-for-13 in his first few games as a professional. He signed earlier in the week for $30,000 .... 2016 6th rounder Will Stillman made his professional debut, pitching two clean innings with a pair of strikeouts. Stillman was selected out of Wofford University.

AZL Padres 9, AZL Dodgers 2

Key Statistics: 3B Fernando Tatis Jr., 1-for-5, 2RBI; RF Manny DeLeon, 2-for-4, RS, 3B, BB; 1B Wilfri De La Cruz, 4-for-5, 3RS, (2)2B, RBI; CF Dayon Olmo, 3-for-5, 2B, 2RS, 2RBI; RHP Mayky Perez, 4IP, 3H, BB, 2K; RHP Andres Munoz (W, 1-0) 2IP, 2H, ER, BB, 3K.

Prospect Watch: Fernando Tatis Jr. had his first hit as a Padre, slapping a single to left. He also had a pair of RBI. He is 1-for-10 so far in the AZL season ... 19-year-old Mayky Perez pitched four shutout innings, striking out two hitters. The 6’5 righty signed for $635,000 back in 2013. He was followed by 17-year-old Andres Munoz who earned the win.
