Salt Lake Bees 4 - Chihuahuas 3
Key Statistics: SS Alexi Amarista 3-5, 2B; CF Auston Bousfield 2-5; C Austin Hedges 2-5, 3B, 2 RBI; LF Nick Torres 1-4; DH Diego Goris 1-3, BB; 2B Luis Urias 1-2, BB; RHP Bryan Rodriguez (L, 4-2) 5.1 IP 8 H 4 R 4 ER 3 BB 2 K; LHP Buddy Baumann 1.2 IP BB 3 K.
Prospect Watch: The Padres sent Torres and Urias up to fill in for Hunter Renfroe, Manuel Margot and Carlos Asuaje who are at the Futures Game….Hedges is now hitting .389...Bousfield after hitting .165 in 67 games for the Missions, getting out of San Antonio may have helped him get off to a fresh start. He put good, but not great numbers in Eugene and Lake Elsinore and has had a nice mini-run with El Paso pushing his batting average to .304…El Paso left nine runners on base in a one-run game…despite taking the loss, Rodriguez has also performed better in Triple-A than he did in Double-A. In four of his seven starts he gave up two earned runs or less, which in the PCL is very good…El Paso has the best record in the PCL at 51-37.
Missions 10 - Tulsa Drillers 5
Key Statistics: CF Franchy Cordero 1-4, BB; 2B Nelson Ward 2-4, 2B, HR (5), RBI, SB (22); SS Jose Rondon 2-5, 2B; RF Nick Schulz 2-4, HR (4), RBI, SB (3); 3B River Stevens 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI; LF Luis Tejada 2-5, 2B, RBI; 1B Taylor Lindsey 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, SB (4); C Rocky Gale 1-4, 3B, 2 RBI, BB; RHP Aaron Northcraft 5.0 IP 6 H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB 3 K 2 HR; RHP Rafael De Paula (BS,2) (W, 3-2) 2.0 IP 2 H 2 R ER 2 BB 3 K; LHP Jose Torres (S,1) 2.0 IP K.
Prospect Watch: All eight position players got on base at least twice tonight to go along with eight extra-base hits…in his first nine games in Double-A Cordero is hitting .342. After the struggles he has been through in the past two years it is nice to see good things happen to good people…Ward is now second in the Texas League in stolen bases with 22…the Missions have now scored four or more runs in their last five games.
Storm 3 - Modesto Nuts 2 (11 innings)
Key Statistics: DH Fernando Perez 2-5, 2B, HR (4), RBI; 3B Ty France 1-4, 2B; RHP Walker Lockett 6.0 IP 2 H R 6 K; RHP Phil Maton 2.0 IP BB 3 K; RHP Colby Blueberg (BS, 2)(W, 1-1) 3.0 IP 3 H R ER BB 2 K.
Prospect Watch: Blueberg blew his second save of the year when he allowed a lead-off triple in the ninth inning but came back to hold the Nuts scoreless in the tenth and eleventh. The big blow of the game came on an eleventh inning blast by Perez to right-center. Perez has battled injuries all year, but when he is healthy he has one of the better swings in the organization…Lockett put together his third straight start where he allowed one run or less. The six-foot-five Floridian was a fourth round pick in the 2012 draft and was seen more as project as a pitcher since he mainly played first base in high school. This season he has 54/11 strikeout to base-on-balls ratio in 59.1 innings pitched…Maton now has 18 strikeouts in 15.1 innings and has only given up five hits. He should be the quickest of the 2015 draft class to the majors.
TinCaps 3 - West Michigan Whitecaps 2
Key Statistics: SS Rudy Giron 2-3, 2 RBI, BB; 3B Carlos Belen 1-4, 2B, RBI; 1B Nick Vilter 1-1, 2 BB; LHP Thomas Dorminy (W, 2-2) 6.0 IP 8 H 2 R 2 ER K; RHP Corey Kimber (S, 1) 3.0 IP 2 H BB K.
Prospect Watch: After putting up an 8.91 ERA in eight starts in Lake Elsinore, Dorminy came back to Fort Wayne, where he had solid numbers last season, and found himself. In ten starts he has given up 20 earned runs for a 3.18 ERA in 56.2 innings. The six-foot lefty profiles best as a middle reliever going forward, but he has shown the ability to consistently eat innings…Belen is hitting.414/.414/.690 in the first seven games of July. He is an immense talent and if he can figure out a consistent approach, it could get interesting. Carlos is only 19, so he has time…Allen’s batting average dropped below .300 for the first time this season…the win moved the TinCaps overall record to 43-43.
Hillsboro Hops 2 - Dust Devils 1 (11 innings)
Key Statistics: SS Chris Baker 2-5; 3B Westhers Magdalena 1-3, RBI, BB; LHP Tim Berry 3.0 IP 4 H R ER BB K; RHP Angel Mejia 4.1 IP 4 K; RHP Chasen Ford (L,0-1) 0.0 IP 3 H R ER BB.
Prospect Watch: The Dust Devils lost in a soggy extra-inning affair in Portland when the Hops opened the eleventh with two straight singles. Tri-Cities walked the next batter to load the bases but the game ended with a walk-off single by the next batter…Tim Berry, who the Padres acquired in a trade with the Marlins, made his organizational debut…Chris Baker, a seventeenth round selection by the Padres in this year’s draft is having a nice year He came into the game fourth in the league in on-base percentage.
AZL D-Backs 9 - AZL Padres 3
Key Statistics: DH Hudson Potts 1-4, BB; 3B/LF Tyler Selesky 1-4, 2B, BB; C Jose Lezama 1-2, 2 BB; 2B/3B Denzell Gowdy 2-4, RBI; LHP Eric Lauer (L, 0-1) 1.2 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER 3 K; RHP Henry Henry 2.1 IP 4 H 3 R 3 ER BB 2 K; RHP Brandon Morrow 1.0 IP 3 H 2 R ER 2 K.
Prospect Watch: Eric Lauer, one the Padres’ three first round draft selections, had his professional debut and as you can see by the line he was a little rusty. His outing was better than the statistics indicate. He gave up a bunt single in the first, then retired the next three batters. In the second inning he struck out a pair of batters before allowing back-to-back hits. He threw 103 innings for Kent State this season so its doubtful the organization is going to push him much for the rest of the year…Potts is hitting .321 in the AZL at 17 in his first 13 games.
