Cherished Memories

MadFriars San Diego Padres Daily Prospect Report: July 14

The Chihuahuas returned from the All-Star break Thursday night, although they probably wish they were still idle, as the team lost big at home. The Missions and the Storm both found the win column, while the TinCaps and Dust Devils went down at home. The AZL Padres got a good outing from Cal Quantrill but still lost.

Nashville Sounds 13, Chihuahuas 3

Key Statistics: 2B Carlos Asuaje, 2-for-3, R; SS Nick Noonan, 2-for-4, 2B, BB, RBI; 3B Diego Goris, 2-for-4; RHP Bryan Rodriguez (L, 4-3) 4 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 5 K; RHP Eric Yardley, IP, 5 H, 6 ER, BB

Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas opened the second half with a blowout loss at home. The pitching staff allowed five homers ... 2B Carlos Asuaje has had quite a busy week, as the infielder had a pair of hits in Sunday’s Futures All-Star game and then he flew across the country to play all nine innings in the Triple-A All-Star game. Asuaje was originally given the night off but replaced Alexi Amarista halfway through the game and had a pair of hits. The 24-year-old infielder in 6th in the PCL with a .326 batting average ... On the day that RHP Eric Yardley was featured by John Conniff on Fox Sports San Diego, the 25-year-old had his worst outing of the season, allowing six earned runs. Yardley’s ERA rose from 2.42 to 4.33 after the poor outing. Yardley is still one of the best stories in the organization and you can read more about his journey here.

Missions 3, Midland RockHounds 1

Key Statistics: 2B Nelson Ward, 1-for-4, 2B, SB (24); SS Jose Rondon, 1-for-4, RBI; RHP Aaron Northcraft (W, 2-2); RHP Jason Jester (S, 12) IP, H, K.

Prospect Watch: The Missions won despite collecting only three hits and going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position ... 2B Nelson Ward had a double and his 24th stolen base of the year in the win. Ward hasn’t hit a ton in the Texas League this season but he can play all over the infield and possesses great speed. Ward was acquired in the Joaquin Benoit trade in the off-season, along with Storm pitcher Enyel De Los Santos. Overall, the 23-year-old out of Georgia is hitting .233/.317/.324 for the Missions this season ... San Antonio got a solid outing out of righty Aaron Northcraft, who earned his second win of the year. Northcraft, 26, was acquired by the Padres last season, along with Justin Upton. The righty out of Santa Ana was resigned in the off-season, after reaching minor league free agency. Northcraft has a 2.88 ERA in seven starts for the Missions.

Storm 8, Visalia Rawhide 2

Key Statistics: 2B Luis Urias, 2-for-4, 2B, 2 R; 1B Trae Santos, 2-for-3, 2 R, BB, HR (6) 3 RBI; RHP Walker Lockett, (W, 4-3) 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, ER, BB, 2 K.

Prospect Watch: The Storm scored three runs in the first inning to set the tone for an easy victory. The Storm are 12-9 in the second half, two games behind first-place Lancaster ... First baseman Trae Santos hit his sixth home run in the victory. The Guamanian first baseman had a brutal April, a good May, and a rough June but is improving in July. Santos led Fort Wayne in homers a year ago and is hitting .265/.324/.500 in July with a couple of homers. The big first baseman has power to the pull side but has not been able to maintain a consistent stroke in 2016 ... Walker Lockett earned his fourth win of the season, pitching seven strong innings, allowing just an earned run. The 4th-rounder in 2012 has a 2.98 ERA in 11 Cal League starts in 2016. The righty was demoted all the way back to the Arizona League just a season ago and now might be ready for a promotion to Double-A. Lockett’s ERA would rank 3rd in the Cal League if he had enough innings to qualify.

Quad Cities River Bandits 4, TinCaps 2

Key Statistics: SS Ruddy Giron, 2-for-4; 1B Brad Zunica, 1-for-4, 2B, RBI; LHP Thomas Dorminy (L, 2-3) 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K; RHP Jean Cosme, 2 IP, 4 H, 3 K.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps fell behind early and went on to lose at home ... Shortstop Ruddy Giron has had a highly disappointing year but finally may be snapping out of the funk that has sapped his prospect status. The 19-year-old had a pair of hits and raised his average to .204 -- the highest its been since May 1. Giron is hitting .364 over his last 10 games, although he has not homered in nearly 300 at-bats. The young shortstop will continue to get at at-bats, in hopes he flashes the promise he did a season ago ... RHP Jean Cosme pitched two scoreless innings, relieving starter Thomas Dorminy. The 20-year-old righty has moved back to the ‘pen in an attempt to limit his innings. Cosme has already thrown a career-high 71 innings, a year after throwing 57. One would think he will pitch an inning or two every few days from here. Cosme pitches in the low-90’s and has flashed a curve that could be a plus pitch.

Eugene Emeralds 4, Dust Devils 2

Key Statistics: G.K. Young, 2-for-4, RBI; 3B Westhers Magdaleno, 1-for-4, R, 2B; RHP Emmanuel Ramirez (L, 3-1) 6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K; RHP Dalton Erb, 2 IP, 2 H, R, 2 K.

Prospect Watch: First baseman G.K. Young had two more hits and is 4-for-6 to start his professional career. The 31st-round pick out of Coastal Carolina helped the small school win the National Championship last month. Young, 21, is a 6-foot first baseman who did hit 17 home runs in college this season ... Speaking of late-round picks, 30th rounder Dalton Erb pitched two solid innings, allowing just an unearned run. The righty played at Division II Chico State and is listed at a very large 6’8 and 250 lbs. He has a 2.08 ERA in seven outings, with six strikeouts and three walks in 13 innings.

AZL Mariners 4, AZL Padres 1

Key Statistics: RHP Cal Quantrill, 3 IP, 3 H, ER, 4 K; RHP Adrian De Horta 2 IP, H, BB, 3 K; LHP Ben Sheckler (L, 1-1) IP, 4 H, 3 ER, K.

Prospect Watch: The AZL Padres managed just two hits, so we will focus on the pitching ... RHP Cal Quantrill has had two very good outings around a bad one. The 8th overall pick in June’s draft threw three innings and allowed an earned run, while striking out four. The 7.50 ERA looks abysmal but one bad inning has skewed his numbers. Quantrill looks to be getting stretched out and one has to wonder if he will move to Fort Wayne in the next few weeks ... RHP Adrian De Horta made his 2016 debut and pitched two scoreless innings. The 8th-rounder in 2013 has battled injuries and wildness throughout his career that may be winding down if he can’t stay healthy. He showed some promise in Tri-City last year and will need to stay healthy down the stretch.
