Cherished Memories

MadFriars San Diego Padres Daily Prospect Report: July 15

El Paso actually loses two games in a row, while San Antonio wastes a solid start by Kyle Lloyd. VanMeter breaks out of a month long slump, while Fort Wayne looks for offense. The Dust Devils can't capitalize on error and Hudson Potts keeps on hitting.

Nashville Sounds 11 - Chihuahuas 4

Key Statistics: LF Jabari Blash 1-1, 2B, 2 BB; 3B Diego Goris 2-4; 1B Taylor Lindsey 3-4, RBI; RHP Carlos Pimentel 5.0 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER 2 BB 5 K HR; LHP Daniel Moskos (L, 4-1) 1.0 IP 4 H 3 R 3 ER HR.

Prospect Watch: The best team in the Padres’ organization has lost back-to-back games by double digits for the first time this season.  Former Padres’ farmhand Jesse Hahn got the start for the A’s affiliate, but not the win…Austin Hedges had his first hitless game in a week and Manuel Margot had the night off…not a lot here tonight to see folks, keep moving…with tonight’s loss El Paso is still 14 games above .500.

Midland Rockhounds 5 - Missions 2

Key Statistics: LF Nick Torres 1-3, 2B, BB, SB (8); RF Nick Schulz 2-4; DH Gabriel Quintana 1-4, HR (1), RBI; RHP Kyle Lloyd (L, 3-4) 6.2 IP 8 H 3 R 3 ER BB 4 K; RHP Tayron Guerrero 1.1 IP 3 H R ER 2 K.

Prospect Watch: Lloyd threw six shutout innings before giving up four singles in the top of the seventh. He was replaced by Guerrero who gave up a double to the first batter to put the Missions behind. The visitors scored in the eighth and ninth for the final margin…while Lloyd profiles better as a reliever than a starter, he has pitched well in that role since being moved into the rotation.  In ten starts he has a 3.83 ERA in 49.1 innings with a 43:20 strikeout to base-on-balls ratio…Nick Torres now has 31 extra-base hits on the season…The Missions outfield is actually pretty good with Torres, Schulz and Franchy Cordero, who is hitting .333 in 15 games since being promoted…tonight’s loss dropped the Missions 29 games under .500.

Storm 6 - Visalia Rawhide 2

Key Statistics: 3B Josh VanMeter 2-3, HR (12), 3 RBI, BB; LF Edwin Moreno 2-4, 2B;  2B Luis Urias 1-3, 2B, 2 BB; RHP Zech Lemond (W, 3-3)  7.0 IP 6 H R ER 3 K.

Prospect Watch: In his first three years of professional baseball VanMeter hit a grand total of three home runs.  This season he has 12 and has particularly hammered Visalia with four in six games against them.  He came into the game hitting .104 for July, so this may be his “slump buster”…Lemond gave up two earned runs in his last outing and was even better tonight.  The third round pick out of Rice University in 2014 has been up and down with the Padres toddling between the rotation and the bullpen.  As with Lloyd, organizational depth has somewhat mandated his inclusion in the rotation, but his future, as it was in college, is coming out of the pen..with a pair of hits tonight, Urias moved atop the Cal League for batting average.  The Storm two previous winners of the league title was Jon Knott in 2002 and Jedd Gyorko in 2011…the Storm are two games under .500.

Quad Cities River Bandits 2 - TinCaps 1

Key Statistics: LF Kodie Tidwel 2-4; 2B Peter Van Gansen 1-3, BB; LHP Jerry Keel (L, 5-9) 5.0 IP 2 H 2 R 2 BB 3 K; RHP Blake Rogers 3.0 IP H 2 K; LHP Nathan Foriest 0.1 IP 3 BB.

Prospect Watch: With the addition of Chris Paddack and now Anderson Espinoza to an already strong pitching staff, the TinCaps aren’t going to run into many problems on the mound. The real question is will they be able to hit?  Tonight the answer was no…With Austin Allen, the team’s best hitter, having the night off, the TinCaps’ lineup included only one batter, Brad Zunica, that came into the game with a batting average over .250…Keel has to be the best pitcher in the league with nine losses.  In three July starts he has thrown 16 innings with 14 strikeouts against two walks. Tonight he gave up a pair of hits and allowed two unearned runs. The six-foot-six sinkerballer from Cal Sate-Northridge could be a candidate for promotion to Lake Elsinore with the inclusion of Espinosa to the staff.  He’s also earned it…Rodgers, a thirty-seventh round draft pick out of Lyons College, also had one of his better outings of the year…With tonight’s loss the TinCaps fell two games under .500.

Eugene Emeralds 9 - Dust Devils 7

Key Statistics: 1B G.K. Young 1-4, 2B, RBI; RF Luis Asuncio 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI; RHP Angel Meija 3.0 IP 3 H 4 R 4 ER 4 BB 4 K; RHP Chasen Ford 1.2 IP 6 H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB K; RHP Mark Zimmerman (L, 0-2) 2.2 IP4 H 2 R 5 K.

Prospect Watch: In a wild game in Pasco, the Dust Devils were not able to capitalize on three errors by the former Padres’ affiliate the Eugene Emeralds as they went down on Friday night for their second straight loss…for those that are just starting to follow the short-season teams, of the Padres’ first ten picks in this year’s draft only two, LHP Joey Lucchesi and RHP Will Stillman, are with the team.  The rest, including all of the big bonus signees, are in the AZL. However, top picks RHP Cal Quantrill and LHP Eric Lauer should be in Eastern Washington soon…College World Series hero G.K. Young has now hit in all three of his professional games…the loss moved the Dust Devil’s record to 15-13.

AZL Reds 10 - AZL Padres 8

Key Statistics: SS Hudson Potts 2-3, 2B, 3B, RBI; CF Dayon Olmo 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI; 3B Denell Gowdy 2-4, 2B, HR (1) RBI; 2B Ariel Ortega 2-3, 2B, BB; LHP Eric Lauer 2.1 IP 3 H 3 R ER 4 K HR; RHP Henry Henry 3.2 IP 2 H 3 R 3 ER 4 BB 3 K; RHP Kyle Gauthier (BS, 2) (L,0-2) 0.1 IP 4 H 3 R 3 ER.

Prospect Watch: Lauer started out tonight the same way he did his last start, looking dominant then ran into trouble.  He retired seven of the first eight batters he faced with four strikeouts, before giving up a home run and back-to-back singles…Potts got his fourth start of the season at shortstop and responded with a pair of extra-base hits.  So far he has been the star of the current draft class…after 20 games the AZL Padres are an even 10-10.
