Sacramento River Cats - Chihuahuas 0
Key Statistics: 1B Hector Sanchez 2-3, BB; 3B Nick Noonan 2-3; LHP Frank Garces (L, 4-4) 3.0 IP 9 R 9 ER BB 5 K 3 HR; PH/3B/RHP Taylor Lindsey 0-1, BB 1.0 3 H 3 R ER BB.
Prospect Watch: El Paso absorbed a pounding on Saturday night as the Padres’ lack of pitching depth at the upper levels reared it’s head again. Former big leaguer Frank Garces absorbed his worst pounding of the season… The Chihuahuas had eight hits, all singles…Hector Sanchez is seeing more time at first base and in 75 plate appearances he is hitting .433/.553/.883…Taylor Lindsey took the mound for the second time this season, although this time he didn’t toss a shutout inning…Nick Noonan continues to have a very good, and quiet season, in Triple-A. The former San Diego Francis Parker High star is hitting .324, but for walk aficionados he only has 15 in 274 plate appearances. That may be somewhat by his 26 extra-base hits and only 10 errors in the field.
Missions 3 - Midland Rockhounds 2 (11 innings)
Key Statistics: 2B Nelson Ward 2-4, BB, RBI; 3B Gabriel Quintana 3-5, 2B, SB (3); DH River Stevens 1-4, RBI, BB; C Rocky Gale 1-4, RBI, BB; RHP Dinelson Lamet 5.2 IP 6 H 2 R 2 ER 2 BB 8 K; LHP Brad Wieck 1.1 IP H BB; LHP Jose Torres 2.0 IP 2 K; RHP Jason Jester (1-1) 2.0 IP H K.
Prospect Watch: For the second straight night the Missions had a walk-off win as Rocky Gale singled in the bottom of the eleventh to send the Alamo City fans home happy again…after an abysmal first half with a .314 winning percentage, which was the worst in the league by a significant amount, the team has been much better in the second half with a 14-15 record…Lamet’s eight strikeouts were one short of his career high…the bullpen allowed just two hits and one walk over five and a third innings.
Storm 5- Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 2
Key Statistics: CF Edwin Moreno 2-4; 3B Ty France 2-4, RBI; 2B Josh VanMeter 0-2, 2 BB; RF Franmil Reyes 2-4, RBI; RHP Chad Huffman (W, 9-3) 5.0 IP 6 H 2 R 1 ER 2 BB 7 K; RHP Mark Zimmerman (S, 1) 2.1 IP H K.
Prospect Watch: The Storm maintained their lead atop the Cal League South with their tenth victory in eleven games..a big boost to Lake Elsinore’s offense has been the inclusion of San Diego State’s Ty France who is hitting .348/.442/.448 in 70 plate appearances and has been seeing time at first, third base and DH…Josh VanMeter has 32 extra-base hits and 45 walks to lead the Storm in both categories…despite not having a lot of fanfare, Huffman has a 2.95 ERA in 94.2 innings in the Cal League. He doesn’t have the big strikeout-to-walk splits at 68:31 but 31 earned runs in 16 starts is impressive.
The TinCaps and Beloit Snappers game was rained out on Saturday. It will be made up as part of a Monday doubleheader.
Hillsboro Hops 6 - Dust Devils 2
Key Statistics: 2B Nate Easley 1-2, 2 BB; 1B Chris Mattison 0-2, 2 BB; SS Chris Baker 1-4, 2B, SB (8); LHP Joey Lucchesi 3.0 IP 2 H 4 K; RHP Braxton Lorenzini (L, 1-2) 3.0 IP 2 H 5 R 3 ER HBP 3 BB 6 K
Prospect Watch: The good news is the Dust Devils got another good pitching performance from a top draft pick. Joey Lucchesi, who was selected in the fourth round by San Diego in this year’s draft, turned in a solid night. He is on a fairly strict innings limit after tossing 111 for Southeast Missouri State and leading the NCAA in strikeouts with 149. Tonight it was apparent that one of the reasons he was able to strike out so many is that batters can’t see the ball and he is also very good at disrupting their timing… The Ems were on top through the fifth inning when the wheels fell off for Braxton Lorenzini who struck out the first six batters he faced before running into trouble…Baker now has eight stolen bases in nine attempts… The loss moved Tri-City into a tie with Spokane in the North division.
AZL Royals 8 - AZL Padres 5
Key Statistics: CF Dayon Olmo 2-5, 3B, HR (3) RBI; Hudson Potts 3-4, 2B, RBI; 2B Ariel Ortega 1-3, BB, RBI; RHP Jean Garcia 5.0 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER 2 BB 2 K; RHP Juan Arias (L, 0-1) 0.0 IP 3 H 4 R 4 ER BB.
Prospect Watch: At 17, Hudson Potts, one of the Padres’ three first round picks, had three hits tonight to continue with his impressive pro debut. Although he was at shortstop tonight, he saw his first action at third base earlier in the week which should be his permanent position going forward… Big right-hander Jean Garcia has a 2.90 ERA in 31 innings and could also be a potential candidate for promotion. He has a 27:8 strikeout-to-walk ratio that would ordinarily be good enough to warrant a trip to the Northwest League but it appears he will have to wait in line behind RHP Lake Bachar - fifth round of this year’s draft - and top pick RHP Cal Quantril, who should be moving soon.
