Tacoma Rainiers 9 – Chihuahuas 2
Key Stats: LHP Frank Garces 4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K; RHP Brandon Morrow 0.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, K; 2B/LF Carlos Asuaje 2-4, 2B, RS; SS Nick Noonan 2-4, 2 2B; RF/CF Hunter Renfroe 1-4, 2B, RBI; LF/RF Nick Torres 2-4, 2B, HR (8), RBI
Prospect Watch: In the seventh inning CF Auston Bousfield nearly made an unbelievable play in right center. Instead the ball landed inches away from him, shot off the wall and towards the corner. It went for an Inside the Park home run and Bousfield left the game injured. With Margot unavailable, that is why all the position changes above happened… The pitching depth in San Diego has taken its toll on El Paso, as they are having to rely on relievers like LHP Frank Garces to make scratch starts and hopefully pitch deep enough to not completely tax their bullpen. Garces, who hasn’t been a full time starter in three years, cruised through the first three innings before unwinding in the fourth and fifth… The Padres decided to leave RHP Brandon Morrow in the pen in hopes of getting him back to San Diego quicker. Thus far batters are hitting .351 off of him and he has allowed 34 earned runs and 68 hits in just 45 innings.
Corpus Christi Hooks 6 – Missions 2
Key Stats: RHP Dinelson Lamet 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 10 K; CF Franchy Cordero 2-4, RS; 3B Josh VanMeter 1-4; DH Gabriel Quintana 1-4, 2B, RBI
Prospect Watch: Dinelson Lamet pitched a lot better than his line would have you believe. Lamet struck out five of the first nine batters of the game. In the fifth he lost control and ended up walking in a run. He was allowed to face another batter, which he struck out before being removed. The reliever, LHP Jose Torres, walked in a run before giving up a grandslam to virtually end the game. Lamet left down 1-0, and by the time the defense got into the dugout it was 6-0… The only thing stopping CF Franchy Cordero from being a top prospect is his contact rate. He is hitting for a high average (.297), has good speed (19 SB), good power (42 extra base hits), however he has already struck out 121 times in just 108 games. He is averaging a strikeout in 26% of his plate appearances, and even during this five game hitting streak has struck out six times.
Storm 7 - Lancaster JetHawks 4
Key Stats: LHP Jerry Keel 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K; LF Edwin Moreno 3-5, 2B, 3 RBI; CF Michael Gettys 2-4; RF Franmil Reyes 2-4, 2 HR (13), 3 RBI; C AJ Kennedy 3-4, HR (1), 3 RS, RBI
Prospect Watch: Game time temperature was 93 degrees and rising, with the Storm playing most of the game in temperatures well over 100… Make it a six game hitting streak for Franmil Reyes. He is hitting .538/.571/1.192 during that stretch. Even more impressive than his power (3 2B, 3B, 4 HR during the stretch), is his ability to drive in runs. Reyes has driven in 16 runs over the past six games and now has 73 for the season… Another Dominican prospect, LF Edwin Moreno is riding a 10 game hit streak and has hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games. During this stretch he is hitting nearly .400 and has seen his season line go from .231/.259/.384 to a more encouraging .272/.297/.487. He is just 22, although will be Rule 5 draft eligible.
South Bend Cubs 2 – TinCaps 0
Key Stats: RHP Jacob Nix 3 IP, 7 H, 2 R, ER, BB 3 K; RHP Blake Rogers 4 IP, H, 3 K;
Prospect Watch: Top prospect, RHP Jacob Nix, was not on an inning limit today. Instead his three innings were a result of laboring through each batter. Nix threw 75 pitches in the three innings allowing eight baserunners. Since being named to the All Star Team, Nix is just 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA. Batters are hitting .336 off of him during this stretch… The Tin Caps managed just four singles. 2B Peter Van Gansen was one of those hits, and now has a modest three-game hitting streak. Despite that he is just hitting .200/.309/.238 over the last two months.
Dust Devils are off for the NWL All- Star Break
AZL Reds 6 – AZL Padres 0
Key Stats: LHP Ben Sheckler 3.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K; RHP Starlin Cordero 2 IP, BB, 2 K; DH Hudson Potts 0-3, BB; SS Fernando Tatis Jr 0-4, 2 K
Prospect Watch: With Paul Quantril getting promoted and getting the start tomorrow for Tri-Cities, eighth round pick Ben Scheckler earned just his second start in Peoria. He set a new career long for innings (3.2) and tied his top mark in strikeouts (four). On the year Scheckler has struck out 22 in just 20.2 innings… The AZL team had the dubious mark of having more errors (four) than hits (two).
