MadFriars Daily Padres Prospect Report: August 8

El Paso rode a pair of homers and good starting pitching to a win at home. The Missions and Storm were off but Fort Wayne lost, despite Austin Allen extending his hitting streak. Tri-City went down at home but the AZL Padres won easily.

Chihuahuas 5, Fresno Grizzlies 2

Key Statistics: C Austin Hedges, 2-for-4, R, RBI; RF Nick Torres, 2-for-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, R; LF Patrick Kivlehan, 2-for-3, R, HR (10), RBI; LHP Frank Garces (W, 5-6) 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R (both unearned), 5 BB, 2 K; RHP Brandon Morrow, IP, H, K; RHP Kevin Quackenbush (S, 2) IP, 3 K.

Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas used a pair of home runs to get the win over Fresno ... Austin Hedges had a pair of singles in the win. The catcher still has an OPS above 1.000 but he has not homered since July 18 ... RF Nick Torres had a multi-hit game, including his third home run for El Paso. Clearly, Torres is enjoying the friendly hitting environment in Southwest University Park, as the outfielder is 10-for-23 in home games since being promoted to Triple-A. Torres has nine homers between San Antonio and El Paso -- already a new career-high. LHP Frank Garces got the win, pitching seven solid innings. The former big leaguer allowed a pair of unearned runs while allowing just four hits. Garces walked five and struck out just two on the evening. Garces has a 5.32 ERA in 13 starts for El Paso but he has held fellow southpaws to a .169 average in 2016.

Missions: The Missions had Monday off.

Storm: The Storm had Monday off.

Lansing Lugnuts 7, TinCaps 4

Key Statistics: C Austin Allen, 1-for-3, 2B, RBI; 3B Carlos Belen, 1-for-2, HR (8), 2 RBI, BB; RF Alan Garcia, 2-for-4; RHP Jacob Nix, 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, BB, 5 K; LHP Elvin Liriano (L, 1-1) 1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, K.

Prospect Watch: Catcher Austin Allen extended his hitting streak to 22 games, putting him just one away from the TinCaps record. Aside from struggling in May, Allen has been one of the best players in the Midwest League in 2016. The former fourth-rounder ranks fifth in the circuit with a .322 average in 2016. The left-handed swinging Allen is ready for the next level offensively but remains a project defensively ... RHP Jacob Nix turned in a good start but did not factor in the decision. Nix, 20, has had an up-and-down second half, seemingly alternating effective starts with rough ones. Overall, Nix has a 4.20 ERA and opposing hitters are batting .291 against the former third-rounder.

Boise Hawks 4, Dust Devils 1

Key Statistics: LF Taylor Kohlwey, 1-for-4, R; LHP Will Headean, 5 IP, 3 H, R (unearned), 2 BB, 6 K; RHP Evan Miller (L, 1-3) IP, 3 H, 2 R, ER, BB, K.

Prospect Watch: LHP Will Headean turned in a solid outing but ended up with the no-decision. Aside from two bad outings, Headean has been quite good for the Dust Devils. His ERA is at 4.34 but he allowed 14 runs in back-to-back starts in June. Aside from those two outings, Headean has a 2.18 ERA for Tri-City this season.

AZL Padres 7, AZL Royals 2

Key Statistics: CF Jack Suwinski, 3-for-5, 2B, SB (2), RBI; SS Hudson Potts, 2-for-4, R; 1B Carlos Sosa, 2-for-4, R; C Bryant Aragon, 2-for-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI; LHP Logan Allen, 2 IP, BB, 2 K; LHP Dan Dallas (W, 1-0) 2 IP, 2 BB, 5 K; RHP Kyle Gauthier, 3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K.

Prospect Watch: LHP Dan Dallas earned his first professional win, throwing a pair of scoreless innings with five strikeouts. The seventh-round pick in June has seven strikeouts in four professional innings ... LHP Logan Allen started and pitched two scoreless innings as he works his way back to Fort Wayne ... Centerfielder Jack Suwinski had three hits, including a double in the victory. Suwinski, a 15th-rounder in June out of high school in Indiana, signed for $550,000. The outfielder is hitting .247/.314/.299 in his pro debut.
