MadFriars Daily Farm Report: August 19

El Paso is rained out but San Antonio rides the long ball to victory. No victories for anyone else, although Hudson Potts and Fernando Tatis did make their debuts in the Northwest League at 17.

The Chihuahuas and Colorado SkySox game in Colorado Springs was cancelled because of rain.  Because the teams are not scheduled to meet again this year the game will not be made up.

Missions 5 - Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4

Key Statistics: RF Nick Schulz 2-4, HR (9) 3 RBI; LF Gabriel Quintana 2-4, 2 HR (19), 2 RBI; CF Franchy Cordero 0-3, BB, SB (10); LHP Tim Berry (W, 1-3)  5.0 IP 5 H 2 R 2 ER 2 BB 2 K HR; RHP Trey McNutt 1.0 IP H R ER BB 2 K; LHP Kyle McGrath 2.0 IP H BB K; LHP Jose Torres (S, 2) 1.0 IP R ER 2 BB K.

Prospect Watch: The Missions put up four runs in the third inning on a three-run home run by Nick Schulz which was followed by a solo shot by Gabriel Quintana.  Quintana added another needed insurance homer in the top of the ninth as Torres made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth getting a big strikeout with the tying run on third…it was Quintana’s fourth home run on the road trip and he has reached a career high with 19…Schulz is having a solid season in the Texas League.  He came into the game third in the league for batting average (.282) and fourth in on-base percentage at .389.  “He generally has a pretty good approach in his at-bats,” said Mike Saeger, the Mission’s play-by-play announcer on Schulz. “He uses the whole field when you look at his spray chart for hits.  He doesn’t try to pull the ball and is a clutch two-out hitter.” ...Saeger also pointed out that San Antonio has now won 10 of 13, 17 of the past 27 and are 25 - 16 since July 7, which is tied for first for the best record in the Texas League.

Lancaster JetHawks 6 - Storm

Key Statistics: SS Chase Jensen 3-4, 2B; CF Michael Gettys 2-5, RBI; DH Fernando Perez 2-4, 2B, RBI; LF Taylor Kohlwey 2-4, 2B; LHP Jerry Keel (L, 2-2) 5.0 IP 7 H 3 R 2 ER 4 K; RHP Gerardo Reyes 2.0 IP H 3 K;  RHP Trey Wingenter 2.0 IP 5 H 2 R 2 ER K.

Prospect Watch: The Storm were only down a run going into the top of the ninth, but the JetHawks put a pair on the board to widen their lead with a two-out rally on the usually reliable Trey Wingenter…despite playing through injuries to his back and groin, Gettys came into the night with a .310/.372/.479 slash line.  The big part of his game that is being affected right now are his stolen base numbers. He had 24 in the first half with the TinCaps and nine with the Storm…Lake Elsinore is now five back with 15 games left to play for a playoff spot.

Lake County Captains 3 - TinCaps  2

Key Statistics: SS Peter Van Gansen 2-5, 2B; 3B Carlos Belen 2-4, 2B, RBI; 2B Kodie Tidwell 1-3, BB; RHP Jacob Nix (L, 2-7) 5.0 IP 5 H 3 R ER 2 BB 3 K; RHP Corey Kimber 3.0 IP H 2 K.

Prospect Watch: Jacob Nix is a great example why a won-loss record is a poor metric when evaluating a prospect in the lower minors.  He has a 3.99 ERA in 94.2 innings with a 76:16 strikeout to base-on-balls ratio, but has caught too much of the plate this season with 107 hits. Throw in the fact that he is only 20, and he has certainly shown enough to go to High-A next season…Belen continues his surge in the second half with a .265/.312/.474 (50 games) slash line as compared to .194/.253/344 (49 games) in the first...Chris Baker, who we featured on FoxSports San Diego earlier this week, was promoted from Tri-City where he was hitting .303/.389/.388 and a Northwest League All-Star.  He is expected to take over at short but he can also play second and third base.

Everett AquaSox 8 - Dust Devils 1

Key Statistics: CF Buddy Reed 2-4; DH Boomer White 2-4; RHP Hansel Rodriguez (L, 0-1) 2.0 IP 3 H 7 R 7 ER 3 BB 2 K HR; RHP Mayky Perez 2.0 IP 4 H R ER BB 2 K; LHP Trevor Seidenberger 1.0 IP H 2 K.

Prospect Watch:Hansel Rodriguez, who came over in the Melvin Upton trade from Toronto, had a tough night giving up a grand slam in the first inning and couldn’t get an out to start the third before being replaced.  Rodriguez came into the game with a 3.65 ERA saw it balloon to 7.53 after giving up seven earned runs in two innings…four Northwest League debuts for the Dust Devils tonight led by Hudson Potts and Fernando Tatis, Jr. Potts, who at 17 is the older of the two by a few months, was 0-3 on the night while Tatis was 1-3, with a single in his first at-bat.  RHP Maky Perez and LHP Trevor Seidenberger, who came over in the Rymer Liriano trade with Milwaukee, also made his NWL debut tonight after brief stints with San Antonio and Lake Elsinore..look for Tatis and Potts to split time between shortstop and third base for the remainder of the season.

AZL Cubs 6 - AZL Padres 1
