The San Diego Padres are taking their display of power on the road. The addition of Brian Giles has seemed to awaken bats throughout the lineup.<br><br> The minor league affiliates had another tough day as Portland was eliminated from playoff contention.

After Sean Burroughs grounded out in the first, Mark Loretta homered on a 0-2 pitch for his ninth homer of the season. One out later Phil Nevin connected for his sixth of the season on a 3-2 count.

In the bottom of the first Jeff Bagwell got one back when he took the first offering from Adam Eaton and hit his 31st homer of the season over the left field wall.

Ryan Klesko extended the lead to 3-1 with a single to right on a full count, two out pitch against a lefty to score Loretta. He had been hitting just .184 against lefties.

Mark Kotsay followed with a double to the wall to score Brian Giles who walked.

Rick White replaced Jerome Robertson after that double in the fifth with the Friars out front 4-1. White walked Gary Bennett to load the bases and Ramon Vasquez battled back from a 1-2 count to shoot a ball up the middle that hit White who kicked it with his right foot and went over the head of the third baseman Morgan Ensberg, who misjudged the ball, to score two runs and blow the game open 6-1.

Nevin added an RBI single off Mike Gallo in the eighth.

Eaton allowed six hits in seven innings. He walked two, struck out four and didn't allow a runner to reach third after Bagwell's homer.


San Diego's Sean Burroughs extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The Padres continued to tinker with the roster on Friday, bringing up pitcher Kevin Walker from Portland and reinstating Keith Lockhart from the disabled list.


Portland was eliminated from playoff contention with a 2-1 loss to Edmonton. Matt Cepicky hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Edmonton Trappers clinched the Pacific Coast League's North Division. Dennis Tankersley didn't get a decision after he pitched a solid seven innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Mobile lost 5-1 against West Tennessee. Justin Germano allowed 10 hits over seven innings to take the loss. Pitcher Alan Webb has been promoted to Triple-A Portland.

Wednesday, pitcher Bryan Gaal was promoted to Portland and first baseman Joe Hastings was promoted to Mobile from Lake Elsinore.

Lake Elsinore lost 7-5 to High Desert. Fort Wayne lost to Battle Creek, 4-3. Vancouver beat Eugene 7-5. CF Brian Wahlbrink, LHP Sean Thompson, and RHP Eddie Bonine were named to the 13-player Northwest League All-Star team.
