The Portland Beavers concluded the season with a 38-34 road record and a 31-41 home record, 69-75 overall. At least four September call ups are expected from Portland. Mike Bynum, a possible call up tomorrow, fell to 7-12 by allowing four runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work for the Beavers as they concluded their season with a 5-1 loss to Edmonton.
Mobile finished up its season Monday with a 3-1 win against West Tennessee. Duncan McAdoo pitched eight strong innings allowing just one run on four hits for the win. Joe Gerber and Kevin Reinking provided the offense with homer runs. Mobile ended its season 61-77, 32-38 in the second half.
With a 14-1 win over the High Desert Mavericks Saturday night, the Lake Elsinore Storm, 38-31 on the season, clinched its third straight playoff berth and will begin post-season play on September 3 as they take on the Inland Empire 66ers in San Bernardino to begin a three game series. The Storm's first home playoff game will be at The Diamond on Thursday, September 4th. Josh Barfield, California League's Most Valuable Player, leads the team as it looks to win a Championship this season. Lake Elsinore beat High Desert 8-5 on Monday that saw the debut of Chris Tierney. Tierney went six strong innings allowing just one run on four hits for his first victory in the Padres system.
The Wizards finished the regular season at 71-66 overall and 31-38 in the second half. By virtue of winning the first half Eastern Division Championship, the Wizards have homefield advantage in round 1 of the playoffs against Battle Creek. Monday's season finale between the two teams was rained out. Fort Wayne landed three players on the Midwest League's Post Season All Star team. Centerfielder Kennard Jones, right-handed starter Gabe Ribas and closer Dale Thayer were all named to the team.
Jones, promoted to the Lake Elsinore Storm (San Diego Padres‚ High Class-A affiliate), hit .307 in 81 games for the Wizards. He scored 61 runs and drove in 30. Jones also had 13 doubles, four triples, 50 walks and a team-best 20 stolen bases.
Ribas, also promoted to Lake Elsinore, finished with a 13-3 mark and a 2.25 earned run average. In 116 innings, Ribas allowed only 86 hits and 26 walks while striking out 116. Ribas was named as the league‚s best right-handed pitcher. In 19 starts, he allowed only 36 runs (29 earned).
Thayer, currently on the disabled list, is third in the league with 25 saves. In 48 innings, Thayer has allowed only 31 hits and 15 walks while striking out 72 with a 2.06 ERA. He was voted as the best right-handed reliever.
Salem-Keizer defeated Eugene 8-3 Saturday, forcing the Emeralds out of playoff contention in the Western Division. They were five games back at that point with six to play and needed a sweep of the series. Salem-Keizer beat up on Eugene Tuesday 9-4 with Jordan Pickens providing most of the offense hitting a three run jack for the Ems.
Idaho Falls beat Casper 2-1 on Monday on a nice pitching performance by Greg Condon. Condon (4-3) went seven innings allowing one run and striking out ten. Idaho Falls is not in contention for a playoff berth.
