MadFriars San Diego Padres Daily Prospect Report: May 6

El Paso coudln't hang on to win on Saturday, but the other three affiliates all picked up the victory.

Nashville Sounds 7, Chihuahuas 3

Key Statistics: RF Rafael Ortega 2-for-3, 2B, BB 2RBI; DH Nick Buss 2-for-4, BB; RHP Tyrell Jenkins 7IP, 5H, 3ER, 9K, 4BB

Prospect Watch:The Chihuahuas bullpen melted down in the eighth inning, turning a tie game into a four-run loss. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead over the first two innings, the offense stalled out and wasn't able to add anything the rest of the night. Starter Tyrell Jenkins worked his longest, and one of his most effective, start as a Padres farmhand. The athletic righty struck out nine Nashville batters, his best total in a game since last May, but continued to struggle with walks. The former first-rounder issued four free passes on Saturday and now owns a 1:1 strikeout to walk ratio on the year with 23 of each in 30.1 innings of work. ... Outfielder Rafael Ortega was once a hot prospect in the Rockies' organization, but has bounced around significantly since then. Still just 25, he's off to a strong start for the Chihuahuas after signing as a minor league free agent this winter. The left-handed hitting outfielder has a .346/.407/.506 line after his two hits on Saturday, an dhas reached base in seven straight games. ... Jamie Romak's hot start for the club appears to have bought him another opportunity to cash in in Asia. The 31-year-old slugger, who owns an .800 slugging percentage through the first month of the season, has reportedly agreed to a deal with SK Wyverns of Korea.

Missions 3, Corpus Christi Hooks 2

Key Statistics: Luis Urias 2-for-3, BB, R; SS Jose Rondon 2-for-4, R; CF Nick Schulz 1-for-3, BB, 2B, 2RBI; RHP Brett Kennedy 6IP, 4H, 0R, 6K, 1BB

Prospect Watch: Nick Schulz timed the team's only extra-base hit of the night quite well, lining a two-run double to right to plate two runs in the fourth inning, then came around to score what would be the decisive run later in the fourth inning. Playing center field once again, he edged his on-base percentage up to .444. ...After a pair of rough starts, Brett Kennedy has now turned in two fantastic efforts in a row. The 22-year-old righty tossed six scoreless frames, striking out six against one walk. The Fordham product allowed only two runners to reach second base and was in the strike zone (62 of 94 pitches were strikes) much more than he had been earlier in the year. ... Luis Urias and Jose Rondon combined for four of the club's eight hits at the top of the lineup. With his walk Saturday, Urias now has three more free passes than strikeouts on the year.

Storm 9 - Modesto Nuts 5

Key Statistics: RF Edwin Moreno 2-for-4, 3B, BB, 2R, 2RBI, SB; CF Michael Gettys 2-for-5, 2B, R, 2RBI, SB; LHP Joey Lucchesi 5IP, 4H, 1ER, 5K, 1BB

Prospect Watch: Joey Lucchesi has been so dominant through the early going this year, that a five inning, one-run outing almost seems like a disappointment. The big lefty was a little less fine in the zone than he's been at other times, issuing a walk, a wild pitch and hitting a batter. But overall, he's continued to be nothing short of stellar. His still league-leading ERA ticked up to 1.08 while he picked up his second win of the year, and he is in the top two in most stats.... Michael Gettys stretched his modest hitting streak to five games, collecting a single and double in five trips to the plate. The talented center fielder has had a rough start to the year, striking out in over 40 percent of his plate appearances, but could be turning a bit of a corner.

TinCaps 4 - Cedar Rapids Kernels 3

Key Statistics: 1B Brad Zunica 1-for-3, HR (6), BB; 2B Reinaldo Ilarraza 1-for-4, 2B, C Marcus Greene 1-for-4, 2B, R, RBI; LHP Will Headean 6IP, 5H, 3ER, 2K, 1BB

Prospect Watch: Big Brad Zunica had a full Jabari on the night, collecting a homer, a strikeout and a walk. The left-handed slugger is tied for third in the Midwest League with six round-trippers and is also among league-leaders in both K rate and walk rate. ...  Starter Will Headean picked up the win, giving up three runs over six innings. The lefty has worked five to six innings in each of his starts, putting up a solid 24:6 strikeout-to-walk ratio over hi 28.1 innings.
