San Diego Padres Daily Minor League Report: May 10

Late inning heroics by Javier Guerra and Rod Boykin lead the system to a sweep on a quiet night.

Both El Paso and San Antonio had the night off

Storm 7, Stockton Ports 5

Key Statistics: RHP Jean Cosme 1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, K; RHP Pedro Avila 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 4 K; SS Javier Guerra 2-4, 2B, HR (2), 5 RBI; CF Michael Gettys 2-4, HR (3), 3 RS, RBI, BB; 1B Ty France 2-4, BB.

Prospect Watch: Jean Cosme was removed from the game after hitting a batter in the second inning.  No word on his injury.  Pedro Avila whose start was most recently skipped, replaced him and pitched three innings…  It has been nearly a month since Javier Guerra’s last home run and this one will be a bit more memorable as he hit a walk-off three-run blast in the 11th inning.  It was the first time all year that Guerra had two extra-base hits in one game, and only his second multi-hit game all season.  The bright side is Guerra’s OPS jumped 51 points.  The downside is he is still hitting .175/.252/.298…  What a difference a month makes.  After hitting .223/.257/.330 in April, CF Michael Gettys is hitting .310/.444/.517 in May.  While his numbers have picked up he has still struck out 56 times in just 31 games...Filling in for injured first baseman Josh Naylor, former San Diego State star Ty France is hitting .306/.390/.361 this month at first base.

TinCaps 3, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2

Key Statistics: LHP Jerry Keel 6.2 IP, 7 H, ER, 2 BB, 3 K; CF Jack Suwinski 1-3, 2B, RBI; 3B Eguy Rosario 2-4; LF Rod Boykin 1-1, HR (3), 2 RBI, BB.

Prospect Watch: After a horrendous last start that saw Jerry Keel give up eight earned runs in 4.2 innings, he went back to his dominant ways giving up just one earned run.  Not counting his last start, Keel has allowed just six earned runs in 30 innings for a 1.80 ERA.  Last year he split time between Fort Wayne, Lake Elsinore, and San Antonio, so it should only be a matter of time before a promotion happens with a few of the starters in Lake Elsinore likely to move up... RHP David Bednar collected his third save on the season.  It was the fifth straight appearance for Bednar without allowing a run.  Over that span he has allowed just a single and a walk while striking out eight.  He now leads the team with a 0.81 WHIP and has struck out 20 in just 16 innings.
