Padres Lose Peoria Opener

The San Diego Padres dropped their Cactus League opener to the Anaheim Angels in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday, losing 8-7. The Angels tallied 16 hits off Padres pitching and rallied for a three-run eighth to hand Edgar Huerta the loss. Huerta did not record an out in his debut performance.

Adam Eaton was tagged for three runs over two innings, allowing five hits.

Jason Szuminski, a rule V pickup, pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

Aussie Chris Oxspring allowed one run in his Cactus League debut.

Jay Payton went 2-2 with two RBI's and two runs scored for the Friars.

Padres minor league position players reported to camp on Friday and will undergo physicals on Saturday in preparation for their first full-squad workout at Peoria Sports Complex on Sunday while minor league pitchers and catchers reported last week. Clay Condrey, Rich Gomez, Alex Fernandez, Ben Risinger, Bobby Scales and Rico Washington are among those participating in minor league camp this spring.
