Padres Pound M's

The San Diego Padres scored seven runs in the top half of the first inning of what turned into a 15-2 rout of the Mariners. Khalil Greene capped the seven run first with a three run homer run to left. Mark Loretta and Tagg Bozied also homered, while former Padre Dave Hansen homered for the M's. On the day the Friars pounded out 19 hits, eight going for extra bases.

Six batters, Sean Burroughs, Mark Loretta, Josh Barfield, Brian Buchanon, Terrence Long and Khalil Greene, had two hits apiece.

Tagg Bozied's home run came off ex-Padre Kevin Jarvis.

Barfield looked solid in his debut at the plate, but was shaky in the field making two plays that should have been counted as errors but went for singles.

Jon Knott had three RBI's and Greene had four on the day.

Aussie Ben Risinger went 1-2 and was hit by a pitch.

Sterling Hitchcock and Mike Bynum pitched two innings of scoreless ball, while Justin Germano pitched two innings, allowing two runs and striking out four. Hitchcock earned the win.

After struggling a bit in his U.S. professional debut Thursday, Japanese reliever Akinori Otsuka struck out two and allowed two hits in the ninth inning Saturday.

The Padres play a pair of split-squad games in Peoria on Sunday, taking on the Mariners in an afternoon game and then hosting the Angels at night. Brian Lawrence will take the mound against the Mariners and Ismael Valdez will face the Angels.
