Rod Beck will miss all of spring training and is not expected to make the opening day roster as he works out personal issues.

General Manager Kevin Towers said Beck would be "out indefinitely", but he would not further comment on why Beck is out. Towers remained confident the depth in the bullpen will provide a cushion while Beck is gone.

Phil Nevin is expected to begin his rehab on Tuesday and has been adamant about returning to the team to begin the regular season.

The Minors:

The San Diego Padres today optioned right-handed pitchers Brian Sweeney and Chris Oxspring, lefthander Rusty Tucker, catcher Humberto Quintero, infielder Bernie Castro and outfielder Henri Stanley to Triple-A Portland.

Right-handed pitcher Justin Germano and outfielder Freddy Guzman were optioned to Double-A Mobile.

In addition, the Padres also reassigned right-handed pitcher Tim Stauffer, catcher Nick Trzesniak and infielder Josh Barfield to minor league camp.
