Halos Digest (John Teutschman)

253

K. Greene

Pinstripes Plus (Mark Rubin)

Mark Says:  I've since dropped Greene for a closer.  I doubt he'll be an impact player just yet.  Kip Wells could really open some eyes this year.  David Wells might close a few.
Chris Says:
Josh Phelps was certainly on my radar screen, but Ben came in and swiped him up. Certainly can't argue. Give Josh five-hundred at bats and he could easily thump 35 homers and drive in 100+ runs.
Strongest Pick:
Phelps is a great fantasy contributor with enough at bats, too bad he has no position.
Weakest Pick:
Carter isn't closing, so he's not worth much of anything for now.

264

B. Koch

MadFriars (Denis Savage)

265

K. Ainsworth

SFDugout (Kevin Cunningham)

Mark Says:  I didn't need the extra catcher, but Martinez is going to be a stud someday.  Should be good trade bait.  I'm officially on the Matt Stairs Bandwagon, by the way.
Chris Says:
Over the last two and a half years, Steve Trachsel has been arguably the Mets' best pitcher. Last year, he was the first in club history to toss two one-hitters during the same season. Many feel he can't duplicate his fifteen win performance.  I do.
Strongest Pick:
Trachsel will easily justify a pick this late and should enjoy a good deal of success with the Mets' improved defense.
Weakest Pick:
Billy Koch isn't worth the heartache.  Sure, he was good a few years back, but an ERA over six? No thanks.
Surprise Pick:  Weaver will reap the benefits of getting out of New York and into pitcher's heaven in LA.  If he gets back his confidence, he's going to be good.

Round Twenty-Three

Nyfansonly (Patrick Teale/Steve Usinger)

276

B. Fullmer

Halos Digest (John Teutschman)

277

K. Lofton

Pinstripes Plus (Mark Rubin)

Mark Says:  I don't generally draft Yankees either (though I broke that rule too for this draft), but Lofton should score 100 runs easily.  And if he steals 20, I'll be thrilled.  Lots of guys with things to prove in this round: Fullmer, Beltre, Choi, Barrett, Pavano, Byrd and Gerut.
Chris Says:
Strong pick by Denis with Jody Gerut. He proved to be Cleveland's most consistent hitter during 2003 when he hit .279 with 22 homers and 75 RBI.
Strongest Pick:
Lofton's the only established producer in the bunch, but Horacio Ramirez could surprise.
Weakest Pick:
Not a big fan of Lidle, particularly not with Cinci.

287

M. LeCroy

Fishpitch (Mark Doring)

288

A. Eaton

MadFriars (Denis Savage)

289

B. Donnelly

SFDugout (Kevin Cunningham)

Mark Says:  Burroughs is my boy, but he has so little power that it limits his value.  Hall, Estrada and LeCroy make up a mini catcher run.  Fun for the whole family, that.
Chris Says:
Fantastic pick by Mark Doring. LeCroy will be Minnesota's designated hitter to begin 2003 and he has the power to put up 25-30 homers. A pick bonus here is that he is also eligible at catcher, a fact some owners may have forgotten.
Strongest Pick:
LeCroy will do quite well for Fishpitch.
Weakest Pick:
Good all-around round.

300

G. Mota

Halos Digest (John Teutschman)

301

J. Hairston Jr.

Pinstripes Plus (Mark Rubin)

Mark Says:  Sleeper round, yay.  Thomson is going to be a good pickup this late, and Rueter's a fine pitcher too.  Big pick here is Edwin Jackson by Patrick.  Love it.
Chris Says:
I made an error and, honestly, I don't know what the heck I was thinking. With that being said, Moises Alou this late is a bargain for Steve Holley.
Mark Says:  Don't worry Chris, Cuddyer's a good player.  He just needs the at bats.
Strongest Pick:
Jackson and Jeff Conine are great picks here.
Weakest Pick:
I'm not sure what Mota's going to do for a team, fight with Mike Piazza maybe?

311

J. Valverde

Fishpitch (Mark Doring)

312

A. Miles

MadFriars (Denis Savage)

313

R. Beck

SFDugout (Kevin Cunningham)

Mark Says:  Roberts was just sitting there with 40 steals in the last round.  I had to take him.  I've since dropped him for Justin Speier after realizing I had no closers.  Wes Helms is a fantastic pick for the last round.
Chris Says:
Valverde will be the go-to ninth inning guy if Matt Mantei suffers another injury in Arizona (or gets traded). A good safety pick considering Mantei's injury-riddled past.
Strongest Pick:
Helms should put up great numbers this year, as long as you ignore those pesky strikeouts.
Weakest Pick:
Charles Johnson's best days are behind him, long behind him.
Surprise Pick:  Tony Armas, remember him?  He was cruising before he got hurt and missed the rest of 2003.  If he bounces back, Ben got an absolute steal.

Closing Comments:  Solid job by all the participants.  At first glance, we'd have to say that PinstripesPlus, NYFansonly and FishPitch are looking like favorites.  Mark Rubin's pitching staff of Pedro, Schilling, Mussina and Millwood should be tough to match and Patrick has a rock-solid offense.  Doring managed to pull off a nice combination of young superstars and old ones, and has a good rotation for the future with Santana, Beckett and Webb.  No team has a distinct advantage though, and it should be a good season.  Stay tuned.
