RHP Adam Eaton (1-0, 2.57) and RHP Casey Daigle (0-1, 18.90)
Eaton deserved a better fate than a "no decision" his last time out, giving up 3 runs in 6 IP, but he was a little wild, walking 3. Eaton hasn't pitched very well at the BOB, but is looking to change that here. Luis Gonzalez has pounded Eaton.
Casey Daigle. I won't lie, when I saw the name, I said aloud, "Who?" Curt Schilling and Miguel Batista are gone, and Casey Daigle is the man? He hasn't shown much so far, but guys like that always kill the Padres. Then again, these aren't last years Padres.
LHP David Wells (0-2, 6.35) and RHP Steve Sparks (0-1, 6.23)
Boomer was a bit off with location and when you do that to Barry Bonds he deposits it in the seats. He actually pitched reasonably well, and the hitters almost got him off the hook in the 9th.
Sparks baffled the Padres his last time out and he should have got the win. I just have a feeling Sparks won't be as lucky this time.
RHP Brian Lawrence (2-1, 5.91) and RHP Elmer Dessens (0-2, 7.63)
The team isn't getting a lot out of BLaw right now. He isn't going deep into games and he isn't locating. He is getting tons of run support and he is taxing the bullpen.
The Padres love to face Elmer Dessens. Over the last 3 seasons Dessens has posted a 9.21 ERA. Brian Giles has given Dessens fits.
Hitters to Watch
All of them! When you watch the Padres put up the kind of numbers that the team has been putting up the last 3 games you even have to watch the pitchers hit.
Richie Sexson. He hit 2 HRs at Petco and was the D'backs big off-season acquisition. He can flat mash.
The bullpen is making progress as they have dropped their ERA to 4.26. Not bad considering it was up over 6. While the team is in the top 5 in the NL in fielding, they can still use some improvement. I don't know if Nevin is still affected by the calf he injured, but he moves off the bag quickly when receiving the throw and he doesn't stretch out for the ball.
In a non-baseball related item, my thoughts go out to the loved ones of Pat Tillman, the former NFL DB with the Arizona Cardinals who gave up a lucrative career in football to defend our country, who was killed in action in Afghanistan. That is certainly a far cry from the spoiled brat currently dominating the headlines (Eli Manning).
