Padres Minors: Donovan and Luck

Todd Donovan continues his torrid pace to the season. It is reminiscent to the time he tallied a 43 game stretch where he got on base consecutively for Lake Elsinore a few short years ago. As if the news could not get any worse for a weak hitting Fort Wayne team. This week, they have a surprise waiting for them and it isn't pretty.

Portland lost 5-2

Matt Bruback had another solid outing wasted on Monday. For the second time in a row, Bruback went seven innings and gave up two runs but did not figure into the decision – and the Beavers eventually lost. Oddly enough, the last three times Bruback has given up two runs or less this year, the team has lost. The only game they won when he gave up two runs or less was in the opening week of the season, but he did not get the "W". Portland has lost seven straight that Bruback has been the starter for.

Mike Bynum gave up a two out three run homer in the eighth to take his third loss of the season. Bynum had not given up more than two runs in any of his previous 18 appearances.

Alex Fernandez has a five game hitting streak and three game RBI streak. He is 6-for-16, .375 BA, and actually has RBI's in four of his last five. He has knocked in seven over the five game stretch.

Mobile won 5-1

Todd Donovan now has the longest hitting streak of any Padre prospect. After a 1-for-4 afternoon on Monday, Donovan had hit safely in 11 straight games. The hit that broke the streak of ten held by multiple players within the organization was an infield hit that drove in Freddy Guzman in the first inning. Donovan also scored twice and now leads the league in runs scored with 29. Over the span of the last eleven, Donovan is 17-for-45, a .377 BA, with nine runs scored.

"I think I remember it vividly," Donovan said of his streak of 43 games in Elsinore. "That should be my goal every season. I am not a prototypical leadoff hitter where I like to take pitches and draw walks. I am more Alfonso Soriano or Nomar Garciaparra (in regards to taking pitches). Unfortunately, my mindset is I don't like to take a lot of pitches and I know it hurts me and it is going to hurt me down the road. But something to where I am reaching base that many games or that many days in a row is something I should make my goal.

"For what I bring to a team or what I bring to an organization getting on base, stealing bases and scoring runs. That is the game of baseball. Teams win one to nothing and it is that one run that separates them from the other team."

Josh Barfield went 4-for-5 and added three RBI's. He leads the team with 24 on the season, seven more than his closest teammate. He knocked in Donovan both times, once on a single in the first and then on a triple in the seventh.

Steve Watkins allowed just three hits over six innings of work while striking out nine. He loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh and Jack Cassel bailed him out of the jam, not allowing a run in the process. Watkins has given up just one run over his last 15 innings. This comes after giving up 15 runs in his previous 8.1 innings.

Fort Wayne Notes

Fort Wayne will travel to face the Lansing Lugnuts on Thursday and the hitting won't face any breaks.

Mark Prior, the Cubs #1 draft pick and second overall selection in the 2001 amateur player draft, will be making a rehabilitation start for the Lugnuts on Thursday, May 20th when Lansing plays host to the Fort Wayne Wizards at 7:05 p.m.

"This could be the single biggest thing to happen to the Lugnuts since the team's inaugural season in 1996," said Jeff Calhoun, General Manager for the Lansing Lugnuts. "We are thrilled to be affiliated with the Cubs, thrilled about Mark Prior's rehab start at Olds Park and thrilled to be able to bring the opportunity to see a major league star in our city to Lugnut fans."
