Phillies Hold Off Padres For Wild 6-4 Win

For the third day in a row, the Phillies and Padres battled back-and-forth and two of those times, the Phillies came away with wins over San Diego. It was a welcome outcome for the Phillies, who played the series without Jim Thome, Placido Polanco, Randy Wolf and Billy Wagner. Sunday's game came down to the final out with an unusual twist.

Miguel Ojeda in the sixth spot. At the time, it seemed a little odd, but it turned out to make for an interesting move for Bowa.

With a 6-3 lead, Jay Witasick was in fact due up next, Bowa ordered Klesko to be intentionally walked to load the bases. It was significant because Bochy had used all of his position players and was down to just pitchers on the bench. Even so, the strategy almost backfired.

Worrell lost command of the strike zone against pinch-hitter Chase Utley at second to end the game and give Worrell his fifth save of the year.

The Phillies had scored two insurance runs in the eighth inning off Marlon Byrd to end the inning.

The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Jay Payton to ground out to end the inning. The Padres were put down in order just once by Padilla and had him in trouble throughout his outing.

In the fourth inning, Jay Payton led off with a double and Ramon Hernandez reached on an error by first baseman Brian Lawrence grounded out to score Payton with the Padres second run of the game. Sean Burroughs then singled home Hernandez to give San Diego a 3-1 lead.

While Padilla was struggling, Lawrence allowed just a first inning single to Bobby Abreu - who extended his hitting streak to 12 games - and a second inning walk. In the third, Lawrence retired the first two hitters before Rollins hit his first homerun of the year into the right field seats, which tied the game at 1-1. After the Padres got their two runs in the fourth, it was the Phillies turn to tie the game when Perez atoned for his error in the top of the inning and blasted his third homerun of the year to tie the game 3-3.

In the fifth, the Phillies went up 4-3 on an RBI single by Pat Burrell that scored Rollins, who had reached on a fielder's choice and went to second when Abreu drew a walk.

Padilla (4-4) won for the fourth straight time and finished the day with six innings pitched, allowing eight hits, three runs - two of which were unearned - and striking out five. Lawrence (6-3) took the loss, pitching five innings and giving up four earned runs on five hits and four walks.

The Padres are half-way through a twelve game road trip that continues Tuesday in Colorado. The Phillies will make a quick two game trip to New York to play the Mets starting Tuesday night.
