Joey Hamilton hurt, Miniel wishes he was

With three-fifths of the Portland rotation in San Diego, Joey Hamilton going down would seem to be a big blow and it could be in the future, but not Sunday. Mobile loses as the hitting is again dead. David Pauley and Rene Miniel each suffered their worst games of the year in an Elsinore loss. The Fort Wayne game was suspended and will be complete on Monday. The Wizards were up 5-0.

Portland won 12-7

Joey Hamilton tweaked his hamstring for the second straight start and had to leave after just two-thirds of an inning. He allowed a run, on a homer, and three hits before he left.

Tim Byrdak, scheduled to start Monday, picked up for Hamilton after pitching about 70 pitches in his start on Tuesday. He went 4.1 innings and allowed nine hits and four runs. He also added a base hit. Bernie Castro was the only Beaver regular not to record a hit.

Tagg Bozied reports that he is not yet at 100 percent and is slower than he used to be. What is disturbing about that is he is slow enough already and any setback makes him crawl.

Bozied was stellar at the plate. He was a triple shy of the cycle and drove in five runs. He now has five hits in the two games he has played since returning.

Bozied again left the game early on Sunday in a double switch in the seventh. There is no recurring injury, it was just a late inning replacement with the game well in hand.

Freddy Guzman got on base the first four times he came to the plate and scored each time. He also added two stolen bases and has 20 between two leagues.

For the second time this season, J.J. Furmaniak has homered in consecutive games. He now has six this year and his last four have all been of the solo variety, all coming in his last eight games. They are also the only RBI's he has gotten over that span. Oddly enough, four of his last seven hits have been homers. Going back even further, five of his last nine hits have left the park over a 13 game span.

Jose Nieves hit his third homer of the season and third in five games. It is more than he had all of 2003! Nieves is 9-for-19 over that span with five RBI's and six runs scored. Five of the hits have gone for extra bases.

Humberto Quintero added three RBI's on a base clearing double. He went 2-for-5 on the day and has a four game hitting streak.

Mobile lost 5-1

Todd Donovan had three of the BayBears five hits. He created the only run when he doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an out. He tried to create more offense by nabbing one steal and was thrown out attempting another. It is the second game in a row he has stolen a base and been thrown out trying to steal in the same game. It coincides with Freddy Guzman going up to Portland.

Mike Wodnicki made his Mobile debut after going 3-1 with a 6.64 ERA for Lake Elsinore. His stats were not entirely impressive with the Storm as he had allowed runs in four of his last six appearances, including a seven hit performance in just an inning and two-thirds. In 16 appearances, Wodnicki surrendered a run or more in seven of them.

Wodnicki went two innings and allowed two runs on four hits and two walks. It was the first time he had walked two batters in any appearance this year. He also struck out two, marking the first time he had whiffed more than one batter this year.

Brian Whitaker went four innings and was pinch hit for in the fifth. He surrendered three runs on six hits and a walk. His four innings of work tied a previous season low. He took the loss and is now 2-3 on the year with a 3.67 ERA.

Lake Elsinore lost 12-3

David Pauley six runs, all earned in five innings of ball. His first start of the year, he gave up five earned runs but seven overall. He gave up seven hits, two of which left the park. He had not allowed a homer in his previous three games and given up just two runs in his last three before Sunday.

In one inning of work, Rene Miniel gave up six runs on five hits with a three run homer to cap it off. His ERA ballooned from 5.54 to 7.33. His ERA has been over 5.00 for seven games.

Luis Cruz committed his second error in as many games. Over his last nine games Cruz has six errors. He has 13 on the season in 48 games.

Michael Johnson had a double and two RBI's. Five of his last seven hits have gone for extra bases and he has six RBI in his last three games.

Fort Wayne game suspended, Wizard up 5-0

The game on Sunday afternoon between the Wizards and Dayton Dragons was suspended due to wet grounds. The game started after a 43 minute rain delay, and once play began, the Wizards took a 5-0. Play was halted due to rain with one out in the top of the fourth inning with the Dragons at bat.

The game will be continued on Monday at 1:00pm as a part of a Memorial Day Doubleheader. The suspended game will be nine innings and game number two, the normally scheduled game for Monday, will be seven innings long. Game two will begin immediately following the conclusion of the suspended game.
