Seven All-Stars from Fort Wayne

The Fort Wayne Wizards landed seven players on the 2004 Eastern Division's All-Star team, Midwest League President George Spelius announced today.

First baseman Fernando Valenzuela, Jr., second baseman Peeter Ramos and outfielder/designated hitter Jordan Pickens were named to the team as reserves. Right-handed pitchers Ryan Klatt, Dirk Hayhurst and Jared Wells, along with left-hander Sean Thompson were named to the pitching staff.

Valenzuela is currently hitting .290 with nine doubles, four home runs and 27 runs batted in.

Ramos is hitting .298 with eight doubles, two triples, three home runs and 25 RBI.

Pickens leads the team with a .307 average, 15 doubles, 11 home runs and 34 RBI.

Klatt, currently on the disabled list, is 4-0 with three saves, and a 2.79 earned run average in 25 appearances out of the bullpen.

Hayhurst, who has made seven starts and a total of 16 appearances, is 4-2 with a 2.76 ERA. He is third on the staff with 55 strikeouts.

Wells is tied for second with Thompson on the staff with 57 strikeouts.

Wells is 3-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 11 starts.

Thompson, the only left-handed starter on the staff, is 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 11 starts.

Last season the Wizards set the franchise mark with six selections to the Midwest League All-Star team. The 2000 Fort Wayne team landed four players on the Midwest League All-Star team.

All-Stars for the Midwest League are nominated and selected by the 14 managers in the league. The 2004 Midwest League All-Star game will be played on Tuesday, June 22 at New Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
