Struggles continue on the farm

Freddy Guzman was thrown out trying to steal. Mobile had the day off. Chris Tierney struggled again for Lake Elsinore. Paul Abraham makes his second appearance for Fort Wayne and the results are less than perfect. Eugene begins play on Friday, as the roster becomes known. Peoria begins to fill out its roster.

Portland lost 5-1

Donovan Osborne got the start just three days after making his Portland debut as a reliever. He went 4.1 innings and gave up three runs on six hits. He has allowed a homer in each appearance to date.

Matt Bruback appears to be the new long reliever. After going 1-8 as a starter, Bruback has made two relief appearances. His second time out was not as successful as the first relief appearance as he gave up two runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.

Freddy Guzman was caught stealing for the first time since joining Portland. He did add his 15th Portland swipe and was the only player on the roster to get on base twice, both coming via the walk. The Beavers managed just three hits on the afternoon.

Jose Nieves extended his hitting streak to 13 with a triple in the seventh. He would score the only Portland run of the night. He is 15-for-44 with five doubles, a triple, and six runs scored over the streak.

Mobile will wrap up the first half of their season with a four game set. They have a half game lead on the division and will play at home while West Tenn plays on the road. The BayBears have won 11 of their last 13 games. Eight of the 11 wins have come against teams that were in first place at the time (either Chattanooga or West Tenn).

Lake Elsinore lost 7-1

Luis Cruz grounded into a double play for the second consecutive day. He has grounded into five double plays in his last 15 games. Since his seven game hitting streak ended, Cruz is 4-for-27.

Marcus Nettles upped his hitting streak to 15 games with a 1-for-2 night. All of his work has come from the leadoff spot, but his results have not shown in the standings. The Storm are 6-9 during his streak and have suffered since Kennard Jones was promoted to Mobile, going 5-8 since losing him.

Chris Tierney allowed seven runs for the second consecutive start. He has now surrendered 14 runs over his last 9.2 innings pitched. Tierney walked four and gave up six hits. He has waked four in a game three times this year in nine starts. He has allowed four runs or more in five of his seven Storm starts. He had allowed four total in his two Fort Wayne starts.

Fort Wayne lost 3-2

Paul Abraham, pitching in just his second game for the Wizards took the loss after Sean Thompson pitched a gem through five.

Abraham gave up three runs, two earned on five hits in an inning and two-thirds. It was his error in his second inning of work that became pivotal and cost the team at least a tie heading into extra innings. It was the second consecutive appearance that he has given up runs.

Thompson did not surrender a run on just two hits. He did walk five and thus his night was cut short because of a high pitch count. Thompson has not given up a run in four of his last seven appearances. All of the scoreless games have been sandwiched around outings where he gave up four runs per game. His first time out in the streak he did not give up a run, then four runs, then none…etc…

Bret Bonvechio has a five game hitting streak and a four game RBI streak. He is 7-for-21 with five RBI's, two homers and a double.

Fernando Valenzuela has a six game hitting streak and is 7-for-21 as well during that time frame. He has one homer, a triple, two doubles and two walks during the stretch. Oddly enough, Valenzuela struck out twice for only the second time this year on Wednesday with the other time happening during this six game hitting streak.

Eugene will begin play on Friday with a game against Salem-Kaiser. Eugene is a 21-and-older league.

The Peoria Padres will play 70 games in 77 days in rookie league ball with the season ending in early September.

Christopher Rayborn and B.J. Jenkins will be on the Peoria roster and first round draft pick Matt Bush is expected out there as well.
