"The club has been informed that Padre minor leaguer Matt Bush was arrested and released Sunday in Peoria, Arizona. The Padres organization has suspended Matt Bush indefinitely pending the club's investigation into the matter. Any further action and/or discipline by the organization will be handled internally," General Manager Kevin Towers said in a statement.
Bush, a local star out of Mission Bay High School, was getting ready to play in short season ball after signing a deal that included a $3.15 million signing bonus.
Towers, always the straight shooter, did not hold back his judgement of the young man, despite his talk of investigation.
"We want people to be real positive role models for kids and set good examples and represent not only the San Diego Padres but professional baseball and San Diego in a very professional manner, and this is not a real good early indicator of something like that," Towers said.
Just a few weeks ago, their last problem child Peter Stonard quit baseball. Stonard was thrown out of two colleges for drug abuse. He was one of their top picks a year ago.
Now Bush is finding trouble at the tender age of 18.
"He has yet to even play a game yet," Towers said in frustration. "These aren't some of the things that you like to see happen to a young man who's about ready to start his career. And its not just for the kid. He's got teammates and people who are probably looking up to him to set an example."
