Tim Stauffer promoted to Portland

The San Diego Padres have moved former first round draft pick Tim Stauffer up from the Mobile BayBears to the Portland Beavers as the teams begin the second half of their season. Steve Watkins was thus transferred to Mobile while Eddie Oropesa was activated from the disabled list and Matt Hampton was placed on the DL.

Tim Stauffer, a first-round pick (fourth overall) of the San Diego Padres in the 2003 draft, was 3-2 with a 2.63 ERA (15er, 51.1ip) in eight starts with the BayBears. He began the season at Class A Lake Elsinore, where he was 2-0 with a 1.78 ERA (7er, 35.1ip) in six starts to begin his professional career.

Stauffer, 22, has been unreal as a starter in the system. Minus his last start, where he allowed seven runs, Stauffer has not given up more than three runs in any of his 13 other starts between Mobile and Lake Elsinore.

Eddie Oropesa was placed on the temporary inactive list on June 20 and is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA (4er, 11.1ip) in 10 appearances with the Beavers.

Steve Watkins, who returns to the BayBears for a second time this season, was 2-3 with a 4.41 ERA (16er, 32.2ip) in six starts with Portland. Watkins had his best outing of the year last time out and the reward for his eight inning, 11 strikeout performance was the demotion.

Matt Hampton carries a 0-1 record and a 4.05 ERA (12er, 26.2ip) in 17 relief appearances for the Beavers.
