Brandon Puffer, 28, will be making his second trip to the big leagues with the Padres in 2004. He had his contract purchased on May 12 and appeared in 12 games going 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA (9 ER/16.0 IP) before being optioned back to Portland on June 11. While with the Beavers, Puffer went 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA (12 ER/32.1 IP) and two saves in 22 games.
Puffer had an amazing run of scoreless innings pitched of 20 with Portland and had been near unhittable until recently where he has allowed eight runs in his last two outings.
Brian Sweeney, 30, made his first Major League start against Arizona Tuesday, earning his first win of the season after limiting the Diamondbacks to one run on four hits over 5.1 innings.
Overall, Sweeney appeared in three games with the Padres (one start), going 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA (3 ER/7.1 IP). He returns to Portland where he began the 2004 season, going 6-2 with a 3.61 ERA (27 ER/67.1 IP) in 12 games (11 starts).
Sweeney has allowed more than three earned runs only once in 12 Portland starts.
