Puffer Traded; Mobile Notes

The San Diego Padres traded right-hander Brandon Puffer to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. Puffer was with the Padres and the move was made as Jake Peavy was activated from the disabled list.

Chris Rojas and Brad Baker each receive big news in Mobile

Brandon Puffer had his troubles playing for the big club, the San Diego Padres, but was virtually unhittable with the Triple-A Portland Beavers.

Until his last two appearances with Portland, Puffer had a 1.20 ERA in 20 games. He had a scoreless streak of 20 innings with Portland and was called up to San Diego twice.

BayBears hurler Chris Rojas has been named the starting pitcher for the Western Division All-Star Team, while Mobile teammates Greg Sain (first base) and Josh Barfield (second base) will also be in the starting lineup. The All-Star Game will be played at BellSouth Park in Chattanooga on July 13th.

Rojas has been the Southern League's top starting pitcher since late May. Over his last seven starts going back to May 21st, he is 4-1 with a 1.52 earned run average. Rojas led Southern League starting pitchers in ERA in June with a mark of 1.24. Overall this season, Rojas is 6-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 15 starts going into his start Friday night at Huntsville.

Sain leads the Southern League in home runs with 22 through Thursday. He could challenge the league's all-time record of 42 set in 1981 by Orlando's Tim Laudner.

Barfield has been one of the league's top run producers this season despite being one of the circuit's youngest players at age 21. He has ranked among the top five in the league in RBI for much of this season after leading all of Minor League Baseball in runs batted in last year.

BayBears relief pitchers Brad Baker and R.D. Spiehs will also pitch for the Western Division club in the All-Star Game. The team will be managed by Mobile manager Gary Jones.

Brad Baker has been named Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Month for June for all of Minor League Baseball. Baker earned nine saves and one win in June.

Baker earned the honor among the 120 full-season teams in Minor League Baseball in 10 leagues.

In the Rolaids Relief Pitcher standings for the full 2004 season to date, Baker ranks first in the Southern League and second in all of the minors.

The Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Month is chosen based on a formula that credits three points for a save, two points for a relief win, and subtracts two points for each loss.

Baker currently leads the Southern League in saves with 21.
