Wizards roster finally at 25

Left-hander Chris Tierney was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Thursday, July 8. The San Diego Padres promoted right-hander Matt Varner from the Eugene Emeralds to Fort Wayne and added infielder Peter Ciofrone to the Wizards club. Ciofrone was the player to be named when the team sent Brandon Puffer to the Boston Red Sox.

Peter Ciofrone comes to Fort Wayne from the Augusta Greenjackets, the Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The Padres acquired him as the player to be named when right-hander Brandon Puffer was sent to Boston on July 2nd.

Ciofrone appeared in 67 games for the Greenjackets, hitting .286 with 16 doubles, three triples, one home run and 33 runs batted in. Ciofrone was selected by the Red Sox in the 16th round of the 2002 June Amateur Draft.

Matt Varner was the 11th round pick out of the University of Houston by the Padres in the 2004 June Amateur Draft. He opened his professional career with Eugene of the Northwest League.

Varner was 0-0 with a 3.24 earned run average in seven relief appearances. In 8 1/3 innings for the Emeralds, he had allowed eight hits and two walks, while striking out 10. Opponents were hitting .216.

Varner has allowed runs in four of the seven appearances he made and he also allowed two inherited runners to score in the three games he did not personally allow a run.

Varner was originally drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 38th round of the 2002 June Amateur Draft. With the University of Houston this season, he went 7-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 19 appearances, including 13 starts. In 89 1/3 innings, Varner allowed 99 hits and 35 walks, while striking out 69.
