McAnulty, Thompson, Steidlmayer promoted

The San Diego Padres made a bevy of moves on Friday within the ranks of their minor leagues. Paul McAnulty and Mike Thompson were each shipped from Double-A Mobile to Triple-A Portland and Luke Steidlmayer was promoted for the second time this year – he is headed from High-A Lake Elsinore to Mobile.

Paul McAnulty, who had a brief call up with the San Diego Padres, was 6-for-41 since returning to the BayBears from the Big League club. Prior to his ascension to the Padres, McAnulty had been batting .301 for Mobile but his average dropped to .279 after being sent back down. He now takes his show to Portland and joins an outfield that already has Jon Knott and Ben Johnson.

Mike Thompson will join McAnulty in Portland. The Beavers, starved for starting pitching help, had put Jack Cassel on the mound for his first start of the year on Thursday. But Thompson should provide an immediate positive impact. The right-hander was 6-6 with a 3.22 ERA for Mobile. In 12 of his 18 starts he surrendered two runs or less.

Luke Steidlmayer had made just four starts with the Storm after beginning the year with Fort Wayne, the Low-A affiliate of the Padres. The righty was 0-1 with a 5.25 ERA for the Storm, allowing four runs or more in three of his four contests. Steidlmayer had gone 7-2 with a 2.28 ERA while pitching for the Wizards.

In other news, Mike Richardson was taken off the disabled list in Mobile. In 47 games, he has hit .190 with 19 hits in 100 at bats.
