Wizards add Grant Varnell for playoff run

Fort Wayne, IN – Infielder Kelvin Vazquez was reassigned to the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League and right-hander Grant Varnell was promoted from Eugene to the Fort Wayne Wizards, San Diego Padres officials announced today.

Grant Varnell will be added to the Wizards roster for the first round of the Midwest League playoffs. The Wizards open the 2005 playoffs at Comstock Park, Michigan against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate).

Varnell was the Padres 25th round pick from the University of Texas-Arlington in this year's June Amateur Draft. He is the 10th player selected by the Padres in the 2005 draft to join the Fort Wayne roster.

In eight appearances, including four starts with Eugene, Varnell was 0-2 with a 3.21 earned run average. In 28 innings, he allowed 28 hits, two walks and struck out 24. He began his professional career this season with the Arizona League Padres and was 1-1 with three saves in 15 appearances. He pitched 28 innings in Arizona, allowing 32 hits and two walks, while striking out 29.

With UT-Arlington this year, Varnell led the team with an 8-2 mark in 17 games (15 starts). In 110 2/3 innings, he allowed 108 hits and 18 walks, while striking out 71. He was second on the staff with five complete games.

Kelvin Vazquez hit .320 for Fort Wayne in 14 games. He collected five doubles and seven runs batted in and scored nine runs. He appeared in five games at second base, three at third base and once in the outfield for the Wizards.

The Wizards roster stands at 25 active players, the Midwest League maximum.
