Padres prospect notes

With an increasing desire to bring about results from their work in the International arena, the San Diego Padres have invited their Dominican Summer League squad to Arizona for the Fall Instructional League.

Among those getting a first look will be Yefri Carvajal, a 16 year old outfielder signed out of the Dominican Republic for $350K. Many in the organization are excited about seeing Carvajal in person.

He will be the youngest player to appear in the Padres Fall Instructional League. Only one other player will be under 18 when the squad is assembled, Dominican Summer League player Ali Solis. The cathcer hit .240 with one homer and 12 RBI's in 40 games.

There have been several players who made an appearance in the Dominican League this year who also made it stateside. Several of those players had visa problems which held up their transfer to the AZL Padres. Orlando Beana, Willy Crafort and Javis Diaz each made it into Arizona and Diaz was a late promotion to Eugene.

On the Storm-front, Cesar Carrillo will again start in game one of the Championship series for Lake Elsinore. Eddie Bonine gets the ball in game two, Clayton Hamilton in game three, Arturo Lopez takes the hill in game four (if necessary) and the famous "to be determined" is penciled in for five.

If it gets to game five, Carrillo could make another guest appearance with Dirk Hayhurst a possibility if he is not needed in a long relief role sometime during the series.

Luke Steidlmayer has been shutdown for the series. The team would likely have brought back Clark Girardeau, had he been around. Unfortunately, after hearing the news that he was demoted in favor of Matt Varner, Girardeau left town.

Josh Barfield will not play in the Arizona Fall League as originally planned. He will instead use the time to relax a little and work with a personal trainer. No word on who will take his place in Arizona has been announced.
