Top 60 Padres' Prospects : 31-60

Here are the Top 60 Padres' prospects, numbers 31-60. MadFriars.com gives a little insight on each selection in our rankings but will follow up more in depth with individual scouting reports on each player throughout this off-season, starting in descending order, after posting the Top 30 next week.

When ranking prospects, much is considered. How do they profile in the future, what have they done so far, and can you give them a higher ranking for raking through the lower levels of the minors?

Each has its weight but the toughest part is determining whether a prospect that shows great intangibles at the lower levels can transfer that ability as he continues to rise up the ladder.

The prospects in the 31-60 range have their plusses and minuses – but each has the chance to propel themselves within the system to greater heights. The Padres' system has been ranked low in comparison to the rest of the league – but if a couple of these players continue to perform, it could force the outsiders to reevaluate their positions on the Padres' farm.

31. Josh Geer

He has a devastating changeup and loves to throw it in any situation. His preference is to work off his change and "slurve". Geer will pitch to contact and should thrive, as his defense gets better around him. A long season showed its wear late in the year as his fastball lost a few ticks.

32. Javis Diaz

There are very few Latin players who possess the type of eye that Diaz has shown. He is aggressive enough to hit his pitch but wary of chasing junk. Now that he has some of the best teachers who can refine his game, Diaz could flourish. He also possesses game-breaking speed. He is the type of player you take a chance on with a high ranking.

33. Alfredo Fernandez

Armed with one of the best fastballs in the system, Fernandez had trouble in the closer's role. And no one is sure why. He has the stuff and it will be something the Padres revisit down the road after moving him from the starting rotation to the bullpen.

34. Daryl Jones

Everyone expected troubles but never thought it would last all year. Jones had problems with off-speed pitches and will see a steady diet until he can break the hex. He remains a top prospect to watch and has as much power potential as anyone in the system.

35. Ben Krosschell

He has developed a lot of movement on his fastball in the last year with the help of the pitching staff and is looking to combine that with an improving slider and curve. His fastball is still gaining speed and he got less run support than any other Emerald pitcher.

36. Ernesto Frieri

The 20-year old reliever was disgusting all year. Armed with a sharp slider and solid off-speed stuff, Frieri blew away the competition at the lower levels. This is actually a developing pattern as he tore through the Dominican Summer League in 2004.

37. Brett Bonvechio

Still developing in the field, Bonvechio has a combination of power and patience that profiles well for his position. The problem has been too much patience. Instead of looking for something to drive early in the count, he tries to work himself into a favorable hitting spot. His walk rate may be high but the strikeouts are out of this world.

38. Mike Baxter

Baxter played in a lot of games this season, despite signing late. August proved to be abysmal for the first baseman. He is a line drive hitter that should provide a good average but will his power catch up with his ability?

39. Mike Thompson

Two years ago, Thompson wasn't on any list. Then he figured it out and has been stellar every since. He won't overpower you but can out-pitch most. He keeps the ball low and it would not surprise to see him make his debut in San Diego next year.

40. Brent Carter

A starter that knows how to pitch. He works within the strike zone and has a unique ability to spot the ball within the outskirts of the zone – you know the ball that could be a ball or strike depending on who the umpire is. Thus, he gets people to chase and the ball is rarely in a position where hitters can get solid wood on it. He does come with a warning label as college pitchers will dominate the lower levels and get tagged when they go up the ladder.

41. Peter Ciofrone

He is a hitter and will always have a place around town. Folks have called him a model – a player they hope to have more of. But the question is where will he play? He is a man without a position and no one is sure just where he will end up on the diamond.

42. Mike Ekstrom

Mixing his pitches, hitting his spots, a run of quality starts and no promotion. The Padres knew something – they wanted to watch his progress down the stretch and the confirmation was Ekstrom losing his wind. His stuff is good now but will it translate into success at the higher levels?

43. Joel Santo

Keep the ball down! Over thirty-two percent of the hits against him went for extra bases and he walked over three per nine innings. He has some electric stuff but must show better command.

44. Matt Varner

The mindset of a closer but the stuff of a middle reliever. Varner believes that no one can beat him and his confidence propels him to success. His best attribute is the first pitch strike and keeping runners off the bases. He will have to work on getting out lefties.

45. Fernando Valenzuela

No one is questioning his hitting ability. He finds a way to get on base but first baseman power he does not have and he is locked into his position. He needs to transform his body to take his game to the next level – something Paul McAnulty did.

46. Juan Ciriaco

Watch him play shortstop and you will be amazed by his range. Watch him field a routine grounder and you cringe hoping he will corral it. At the plate, Ciriaco was clutch with game-winning hits and doing a lot of damage from the nine-hole. Can he be sound enough defensively that a manager doesn't look away when the ball is hit right at him?

47. Drew Macias

The surest centerfielder in the system. And his game at the plate is evolving. The Padres would like to see more pop from him and he is set to gain 15 pounds this off-season to capitalize on his easy swing.

48. William Venable

There are few people in the system with the raw tools just waiting to explode that this kid possesses. He could be the steal of the century and it would not surprise to see him skyrocket up this list.

49. Kyle Stutes

The left-hander has an above-average curveball and throws it in any count, making his fastball look more dynamic. The staff in Fort Wayne periodically brought him into the game with runners on base, a testament to their faith in his ability.

50. Wilmer Villatoro

The lanky right-hander has good stuff but the mental game has taken its toll at times. He was hammered in Mobile, leaving the ball up in the zone. He was used in a lot of pressure situations and the squeeze caught up with him. This year could be make or break for him.

51. Billy Killian

It was a strange year for Killian. He didn't walk much, didn't strike out much, hit a lot of singles, didn't score many runs and had his at bats curtailed by other players. His work behind the plate seemed to take a step backwards. You would have thought he would have been used more as a high round pick.

52. Seth Johnston

A gap hitter who will maintain a high average as he moves up. He will need to increase his power and stamina as it stagnated in his system debut. He also has some speed, though he did not use it much this season. At some point, Johnston will be moved to second base in the Padres' system as he does not profile well in full-time duty at short. A sleeper.

53. Paul Abraham

From Independent League Ball to Double-A – Abraham was the top reliever in Lake Elsinore, struggled out of the gate in Mobile, before coming around. He was the go-to guy all year, especially with men on base, and that faith speaks volumes.

54. Mike Sansoe

Possesses an innate ability to hit the ball where it is pitched, never trying to do too much with it. His game is based on reaching base and he has a measure of speed that will turn into aggressiveness down the road. Sansoe also plays a solid centerfield and is gaining experience at the corners. Has very little power so he will have to rely on aggressiveness.

55. Ryan Meaux

First pitch strikes matter and to Meaux they matter a lot. He was used as a starter for the 2004 season but his approach to the game is refined as a reliever, where he will stay. He is trying to become a three-pitch reliever as he works on perfecting the change. That will be key to the left-hander's success, as his fastball sits in the upper eighties.

56. Drew Davidson

He has serious pull power and is accustomed to being the man that drives in runs. He should, however, be drawing more walks with his talent – it will be interesting to see how he develops.

57. John Madden

This future closer features a solid sinker and a live fastball. Right-handed hitters had a difficult time locating the sinker but lefties had a field day. He will need to work on a different pitch to approach the lefties as it enters their wheelhouse and gets pounded. Only one of the ten extra base hits he gave up was credited to a righty.

58. Dustin Delucchi

An on base machine that has one of the top three batting eyes in the system. It is incredibly tough not to cheer for him, but he turns 28 in December. Who knows how he would handle a bench role in the Majors – but a guy who gets on base is always welcome.

59. Ricky Steik

A reliever that keeps runners from scoring – a novel idea indeed. His runs against came in bunches and he seemed to mentally tire late in the year, as he held a sub-2.00 ERA into mid-July. Knowing his role will help him in the future.

60. Jose Oyervidez

Sure he led the planet in walks (sixth in all the minors) but the right-hander was nasty at times and proved to be effective despite issuing a free pass to any kid who wanted in the carnival. His peripherals are intriguing and command will play a huge role in his future.

The Top 30 Padres' Prospects will be out next Friday, a week and a day after Thanksgiving.
