The Beaver defense played well behind Thompson turning three double plays to end the second, fifth, and sixth innings, and turned four on the night.
"My changeup was working well for me tonight, and that kept the hitters honest, said Thompson. "And I had good movement on my fastball."
Thompson's ERA has dropped every year since joining the Padres in 1999 as a fifth round draft pick to a low of 3.19 last year.
Third baseman Justin Leone reached base in his five at bats. He went 3-for-3 with a single, double and homer and walked in his other two at bats. The last time Leone reached base five times in the same game was August 28 of 2003. Ironically he accomplished the feat in successive days in 2003. Playing for San Antonio of the Texas League, Leone 4-for-5 with six walks and six runs scored over that two-day span.
Outfielder Dustin Delucchi was put on the seven day disabled list with a sprained right ankle prior to the start of the season. Delucchi hit .305 with 48 walks and just 29 strikeouts for the Beavers last year.
"It's not very serious, but we had to put him there," said manager Craig Colbert.
